AS EXPERIENCED BY: Gabe
LOCATION: Interstate H-3, O‘ahu, Hawai‘i
DATE: Unknown
I used to work as a parking attendant on the Leeward side of O‘ahu. Sometimes my shift would end late, between midnight and 1:30am. Though nothing unusual ever happened at work, I can’t say the same for my drive home. By the time I finished work, I was pretty beat, and to stay awake on my drive home, I tried different things to keep my mind alert and active. I would usually turn up the radio and sing wildly, not like there was anyone to hear me.

As I cruised towards the Windward side along the H-3 one early morning, I noticed that there were no other cars on the road. In the darkness, the outline of the mountains were barely visible. Feeling extra sleepy and perhaps even a little bit lonely, I turned on the radio and at that moment, Santeria started playing. The popular Sublime song was one of my all-time favorites. I cranked up the volume and sang along.
“I don’t practice Santeria, I ain’t got no crystal ball. . .”
I was getting more and more into the lyrics, and when I hit the chorus, I heard an extra pair of vocals coming from the back seat.  I stopped singing and listened carefully. Being familiar with the song, I wondered if this was a different version of Santeria, one I hadn’t heard before.
No, it was the same song that usually played on the radio. But that voice. . .

I didn’t turn around because I knew there was no one else in the car. I just sat quietly waiting for the voice to start singing again. Nothing. Attributing it to fatigue after a long shift, I started singing again, “What I really want to know, my baby…”

To my surprise, the other voice chimed in again! This time, I decided to sing a bit longer, pretending I didn’t hear my unseen backup singer.
“What I really want to say, I can’t define...”
When I abruptly stopped, the voice continued on for another line all by itself before suddenly stopping, too. This time I was certain it hadn’t been my imagination, and someone was in the car with me. On the verge of panic, I pulled over to the shoulder and brought the car to a complete stop. Taking a deep breath, I turned on the cabin lights and quickly searched behind me. The seat was empty.

I turned off the radio, just to make sure there wouldn’t be any more unexpected singing and continued on my journey home. I didn’t need to sing to stay awake anymore, as the strange experience had provided an adrenaline rush throughout my body. I never heard the phantom backup singer again. I’m not sure how to explain the voice and where it came from. Perhaps, I don’t “really want to know” after all.

The Day I Did Not Find My Friend

Ocean Shore over in Hilo on the Isle of Hawaii (Big Island) Photo by PJ 2009

This happened to a friend of my father, Lee, and here he is sharing the experience he had the day after my father died.

I often take a brisk walk by the ocean, I grew up here and this is where I feel at home as I spend my retirement conversing with friends and those that grew up in the area, with my heart not being the same as it used to be I keep myself in reasonable shape by calm tranquil walks and gossiping with my friends both young and old.

As usual I started my morning routine by walking the same ocean shore path as I have for decades, but this time I heard like a voice in the back of my head. "Do not go there, it is not for you to be there". I did not think too much about it, but I decided to turn the other way and walk up the ocean shore instead of down, only later that day I heard from others that my best friend was found in the path I usually would go, and I am sure my weak heart would not been able to handle the strain such a find would caused me. I thank God for watching over me and I believe he had his angles warn me that morning for my own protection.

Theobroma cacao - Cocoa - The Food of the Gods

I am going to describe cacao, also known as cocoa, from an aspect as a food of deep cultural, religious and medicinal origin in Mesoamerican culture. Cacao has been cultivated in Mesoamerica for almost 4000 years or perhaps even longer, though its origin is more likely to be from the Amazons. Some would even say the gods themselves were advanced aliens, extraterrestrials or ultra-terrestrial visitors.

The Mayans and the Olmec before them referred to cacao as kakaw, and their stories tell how it among other foods were brought from a mountain by the gods. It was believed in their mythology that the tree itself was thought to be first grown in the Garden of life, and its name literally means “Tree of the Gods”. The Aztecs had one ceremonial drink made of cacao called cacahuatl, meaning bitter water in nahuatl. This drink was only consumed by men as they thought it to be dangerous to women and children.

There was another drink made of cacao used by the Aztecs, which was spiced with vanilla, chili and honey. This drink was described to be used in curing black blood, something European scholars thought to mean depression, though I believe the Aztecs meant this more literally. The Aztecs had significant medical knowledge and herbal lore compared to the conquistadors and others in 16th century Europe. And with an extensive practice of blood sacrifice of theirs and other people’s blood, they knew how cacao could cure black blood, and I actually know one case where this was used in curing black blood caused by metabolic lactic acidosis.  (When My Life Flashed Before My Eyes)

Theobroma cacao - Close up of cocoa beans, Dry cacao beans was even used as currency by the Aztec.

The pulp of the Cacao pods is edible and one can make a sweet juice from it. On the other hand, how the cocoa bean was discovered to be a tasty and palatable food if fermented and processed in a complex chain is a mystery, unless one accepts the explanation that the Mesoamerican gods came down from the mountain and showed them how to make it into a food, which I have myself tasted the pulp and the raw beans and found the bean to taste horrible while the cacao pod pulp tasted good with fruity sweet taste.

When People are Haunted Instead of Objects

Illustration by PJ 2011: The St. Louis, Missouri Airport,
In a personal haunting it might follow you where ever you go.

Some months ago I was involved in an investigation at a building that had been reported to have paranormal activity going on. The team I had just joined had entered the building and after checking in with security, we went up stairs to begin our investigation. We were interviewing one of the employees about the reported activity that happens in the area after closing.

This employee was telling us all about the strange noises she heard and how things wold move from one spot to another and of hearing a voice. The lady also said there was activity at her house and she was thinking that maybe her house had a spirit in it also. She was a genuine as they come and we could tell almost right from the start that she did indeed experience activity. She then left for the night, out went the lights and the investigation was underway.

After spending over 4 hours at this location and, not getting any real creditable evidence, we wrapped up our investigation and we were out of there. While the director of our team was going over all the video and recordings and so on, there was really nothing that we could say was paranormal.

Because this employee could describe her experiences so clearly and so definitive, we all came to the conclusion that it was indeed the employee herself that was haunted and not the building. In other words, we believe that this entity has attached itself to her or followed her around and caused the activity where it wanted to as long as its host was there. Some people are a lot more sensitive to the spirit world then others and we thought that we had come in contact with a person that was indeed sensitive enough to attract spirits to her. To us, it could have only been that she indeed had a spirt follow her around or it could have even been attached to her. That is the only explanation that we could come up with in this case.

There has been many other cases of an entity or spirit attaching itself or following its host around. Usually this type of haunting is not dangerous however, at times it can be.

For more reading and more information about haunted people, I would suggest the following book. Haunted People/Haunted Minds Written by: Bobbie Atristian It is a great book and well worth the read.

The Cliff Where Babies Cry

Diamond Head as seen from Waikiki. Photo by PJ 2008

This happened to my friend Loa a few years ago over by the Diamond Crater on the Island of Oahu, Honolulu.

A long time ago, a few of my friends and I were drinking at a cliff near Diamond Head. We were sitting on the wall with our back facing the ocean. All of us were drinking and enjoying ourselves. As I was smoking a cigarette with my one friend, she finished her cigarette and flicked it off the cliff, but the cigarette came right back up and hit her in the head. We started laughing and didn't think anything of it. Then maybe 20 minutes later, she did the same thing and this time there was no wind. We were stumped because there was not any wind and what is the chance of that happening twice in a row. My friend and I started feeling a little scared so we told our friends to be quiet for a while. As we told them of what had just happened, we all listened and off in the distance we could hear the faint sound of babies crying. We got spooked out and decided to leave.

The next day, we told my friend's aunt of what had happened. She explained to us that back in the old Hawaiian days, Hawaiians would marry their family members to keep their bloodline strong. Unfortunately, the babies were sometimes born with birth defects and mental retardation. The Hawaiian people would throw these babies off that very cliff. She said that was probably what we heard and the cigarette was a sign for us to leave because the spirits of babies probably thought we were there to cause more harm to them. I feel positive that our spirits can stay earthbound for a good while after the death of our physical bodies, even more so the spirit of a newborn child that has not had the chance to experience life and to fill it's purpose  for being born and brought into this world.
