The Mischievous Spirit

In my place in Tromsø, there was more than my brother and I, we both noticed a spirit tenant, which we just referred to as the mischievous spirit. The spirit seemed to be more active when only one of us was home, but he would sometimes make his presence known with both of us there.

Several times I would wake up having my face covered with what felt like spider silk, but it was not, it was the very fine fibers of a madras I kept locked up when my brother was away for a few weeks, since he frequently used to alternate between staying at our moms and with me. It was quite annoying but happened at least a few times a week when I was alone, and never when others were in the house.

My brother experienced his bags of sweets mysteriously disappear and reappear on the table in the living room, and one time he got locked out of the apartment by our mischievous spirit guest. He had just walked downstairs to pick up his laundry and as he came up to open the door he could hear the key that was in lock being twisted as the door became locked. Followed by the sound of the already locked alternative entrance door through the bedroom unlock itself. As if the spirit was just toying with him proving it could lock him out and unlock the doors as is pleased if it wanted to. Naturally he wondered if someone was inside as he entered he found the apartment had no one else inside it. He instantly called me to share his most weird experience ever.

Something we both experienced were with the lights, and this happened so many times each month, regardless if it was the extremely expensive long life bulbs that are supposed to last one year or regular cheap light bulbs the lights would get snuffed out as if they were candles, or paraffin lamps. Sometimes we would have to buy new bulbs at least once times a week for the very same lamps, and this made me feel certain that our mischievous spirit lived back before electricity since it still liked to snuff out the lights like it did back in it's own time.

Am I Invisible?

 Photo PJ 2009

Sometimes when I was growing up I would wonder if I was invisible, there was so many times when I would walk in a room and no one would notice that I am there before I make my presence known, even photocell controlled doors would at times seem unable to notice my presence, one time in particular I was trying to enter a store with automatic doors, after trying to get the doors open for about 10 minutes another costumer walked over and they instantly opened, but when I would go towards it there was no response.

I have watched burglars walk right by me and not noticing me at all, the night campus security guards would check and secure the room I am in, while I am watching every step he would take, and then watch him leave again without noticing me at all even though he had to pass me both entering and leaving, this did not happen once but basically every night for months. The same security guard would locate and question every other student he found in the same room though. This has also happened when it comes to animals where I would walk at my normal pace, and the animal would neither see, hear or smell me before I am close enough to pick them up unnoticed, which at this point I often cause them quite a scare when they do realize that one has been able to get that close to them unnoticed, the same appears to be true when one is jogging, causing my friends to give me the nickname of the walking spirit, since I seemed to be able to appear and disappear in fully crowded classrooms with no one noticing that I came or left.

More so when I tested this on the infrared cameras I found that I could enter rooms witch had motion controlled lights and they would not be activated, I even tried to deliberately activate the infrared sensors by waving at them, and only after putting in a great deal of effort would the lights finally come on, making it easier to just walk over to the light switch in order to bypass the annoying in my case seemingly non-functioning motion controlled lights.

Sometimes I wonder if this is some of the same ways illusionists uses in their way of fooling people in their tricks, which must be why I have always been fascinated by magic, and the seemingly breathtaking ability they show off to make things disappear in thin air.

Living in Massachusetts Part #1

This is in from Eileen, sharing what happened while she was living in Massachusetts.
We lived in Mass for a few years in a huge house that we couldn't really afford to heat after the first year. It was myself, my husband and my year old son. I was asking my friends  if they knew about a more affordable place to rent. I watched my two friends look at each other and then they finally said, yes. I didn't think too much about that look at the time.

We cleaned it up and finally moved in. Almost immediately odd things started to happen. I bought a brand new pair of sneakers and set them next to each other when I took them off. I would go out and come back and find them on their sides. I mentioned it to my husband and he said, yeah, my boots keep doing the same. I thought it was just uneven boards.

The house had been a single 3 story family dwelling that had been made into 3 apts. One to each floor, It had a front staircase and a back staircase, as a lot of old houses in the neighborhood had. All 3 apartments used the back staircase, while the first two apartments were connected by the front enclosed staircase. We lived on the first floor.

I never had a bad feeling about the place. My son had his own room in the back of the house, off the kitchen. As a toddler tends to do, He didnt want to go to sleep and he would cry and fuss. A couple of times I was just about ready to go and see if he was wet or uncomfortable when I heard him start to babble and laugh and not long after that he would fall asleep.

Other things would happen. The bathroom door would never stay shut, I would check it, making sure it was latched properly but most of the time it would slowly open itself. Things I would put down were not there when I went back for them. I even lost one of my sneakers. I tore the house apart, thinking maybe my son had put it someplace when he was walking and playing around the house. I even checked the trash can and toy box. He tended to hide things. We found him hiding the car keys one day in the huge planted plant we had in the living room, We would never had thought to look there if we hadn't caught him burying them. I never did find the other sneaker when we finally moved out.

After a few months I was having coffee with some of my friends and knowing that 2 of the 3 had lived in the house at one time or another, if they had anything strange or odd happen to them?

They said yes, they both had, I asked them why they didn't mention it before and I really didn't get much of a answer. They  gave me the history of the house. It had one time been the home of a bedridden mother in her 90's and her daughter who had been tending her. The daughter was in her 70's and had a heart attack and passed away. by the time anyone figured it out, the mother had passed on also. The house had been boarded up for quite a few years before someone bought it and renovated it, breaking it up into 3 large apartments. Apparently though, they couldn't keep tenants in it for very long,, especially those with children.

My friend Jane had lived up on the 3rd floor with her very small daughter after her divorce from her first husband. When her daughter got extremely sick and was hospitalized, Jane would be at the hospital quite a bit. She would come home exhausted and very upset. One night, she was sleeping and woke suddenly and saw a woman standing at the end of her bed and she swears she heard the woman say that her daughter would be just fine. She said she fell back asleep and slept the rest of the night in a deep sleep. She went to the hospital that morning and her daughter had taken a turn for the better.

She thinks the woman she saw was the daughter of the house. She wasn't the only one of her family that had odd things happen. Her brother was over for his nieces birthday party when he and the rest of the family watched a toy duck cross the room with no apparent help what so ever. Her father had stayed over once and would not stay there by himself again after that. I did not find out what happened with that, but her father was a firefighter and was not frightened easily.

Jane also said that when she was getting ready to marry her second husband, she kept the wedding gown on the back of the bathroom door. She would go out and come back and the dress would be on the floor across the room. That happened a few times and she told me, laughing, that she should have listened to whatever was trying to tell her not to get married, because he turned out to be a big jerk. Jane and her daughter had moved out after the wedding.

The Babysitter and The Balcony

This one is from back when I was still living in Tromsø, Norway. Since I always loved a good story, and my friends loved to share their ghost stories with me. This one was told me, by my friend Rob, he had just been babysitting for a few weeks and was quite eager to share this story with me.

The story went like this, according to my recollection of it; The kids went to bed and everything was calm in the house, while the babysitter was reading books with his back against a door that opened out to a 2nd floor balcony, on the stroke of midnight, that door swung open, he checked the door and closed it thinking it must have been a gust of wind, even though it seemed so calm that night. But no sooner than he sat down the door swung open again, this time he checked it furiously pulling it too see how much it would take to swing open, and figured it would not open easily at all. Closed it and sat down to have the same incident repeating itself. Thinking to himself this seems to be something more than just gusts of wind, he spoke out, letting what entity this might be to leave the house alone, since the parents were not home and he was there to watch their kids.

When the mother returned he confronted her and asked if it was common for the balcony door to open up on its own, were she immediately responded, "ooh that is just my mother, she likes to check out on the kids at night". She took him out on the balcony and pointed over to the nearby graveyard. "She is buried there and loves to sweep by and check us out quite often".

The next night he was babysitting again at the stroke of midnight, the balcony door swung open, but this time he was prepared. Telling the spirit of the grandmother that he was the babysitter, and she didn't need to worry about the kids, and that the mother would be back around 3AM if she wanted to visit her then. All was calm for the rest of the night, and the mother returned on time, and no sooner than she entered the home, the balcony door swung, with the grandmothers spirit there to check on time that everything was in order, and that her daughter indeed got home safely.

The Cat That Could Pass Through Locked Doors

This is another experience from our place back in Tromsø, Norway, not only on one occation but on several over the years we would continuously return home to find our cat inside our locked apartment after we took him out with us and left for work, store, university or where ever.

At first we thought our landlord, that lived upstairs from us might have been nice enough to lock our cat in for us while we were away, but when we asked he said that we had the only keys, and even if he had keys he would let the cat stay outdoors until we get home.

You might think like we did that he might enter some other way, like through an open window or a ventilation shaft, we though about that too but on none of the occasions was any of the windows open, they were all securely locked, and our cat was not able to get in through the ventilation shafts since all of them were blocked so they would let air in but keep any animal out (like a rat, cat or bird) secondly all the ventilators to the apartment was too high up for our docile and heavy set cat to climb up to and to narrow for him anyway. He never even climb trees.

The most compelling happening was when our landlord returned back from vacation after two weeks and unlocked his own apartment upstairs to find our cat inside waiting for him, he was totally shocked to find the cat there and could see that he was in good shape and would not been what one would expect if he been there for two weeks locked up, so when he brought our cat down to us, we could inform that we had just put him outside a while earlier so it seemed totally impossible for him to just appeared into his apartment like that, but still that was exactly what we had experienced so many times our self.

Some would say he could have sneak in without you noticing him, but I know for sure we would have noticed him, and since we were aware that might been the case we made sure he was not around when we opened the door to remove any doubts in case he made another surprise entering, which he continued to do.
