Huaka'i Pō - The Nightmarchers of Hawaii

There are actually a few different kind of nightmarchers in Hawaii, depending what type of warriors the night marchers trail were originally made up of, there are also several variants of the legends on the processions and what would happen to those that encounter these wandering warriors of the past.

Many Nightmarcher trails are well known among these in Laie, and in the Manoa Valley. People report everything from hearing distant drums, barking of the warriors dogs, seeing the light of their torches farther up the trail, and some even say they have seen the night marchers marching with full warriors entire. There are many dangers that are supposed to be connected to being spotted by the Night marchers, and how the only way to avoid the dangers are to show total respect, and even then one are said to require a relative in the Nightmarchers procession in order to not be whisked away, or fall dead to the ground right were one stands.

The Night marches or in Hawaiian (Huaka'i Pō) travel through out the islands of Hawaii to do as they always done and, that is protect their home. They are the ghost of Hawaii's warriors. On the nights of Kane Lu lono, Akua or, on the night of kaloa they leave their burial grounds and they march all through many sections of the islands. The Nightmarchers  will march out to battles of the past and they will also march out to several of the places that are considered grounds. Hawaii's Night Marchers leave their final resting places about sunset and will walk and march the islands of Hawaii until sunrise. I have also heard of a few daytime sightings. Daytime sightings are usually only witnessed when the Night Marches are going out to guide and escort a dying relative to the spirit world.

Right before the Night marchers come upon one, You can usually hear their drums beating and there have been reports of hearing chanting, dogs barking and one can see the Night Marchers torch lights from a distance. According to legend it is best to leave the area when you see or hear any of these things in to save yourself form death if seen by a Night marcher. However, if you don't have time to escape the Night Marchers, it is said that if you lay down, face down on the ground it is a show of respect and that the Night marchers (might not) harm you. Some even say that lying face down prevents the Night marchers from noticing you. However, I would rather leave the area if I had time to get away.

If you live in an area near the Nightmarchers trail and you hear the chanting, drums torch lights and a foul smell. You must go indoors to protect your self. If the Nightmarchers sees you, the only way to avoid death is to be in the bloodline of one of the Nightmarchers. if a member of the persuasion knows you and you are related in that family then, no harm will come to you or so the legends say.

On The Island of Oaho; Manoa Valley at the University of Hawaii Manoa Campus, Pali Highway in the majestic Koolau Mountains, at The Kamehameha Schools campus located in the Kapalama part, The Kualoa Ranch on the Windward side, Laie and at La Perouse Bay

The above mentioned are only a few of the places where Nightmarchers have been reported. However, there are many other locations where it is said that Hawaii's Night Marchers will visit. It is suggested that any night time visitors to any Night Marcher location, or even day time visitors, be very wary and alert!

Don't Disrespect The Spirits At Judd Trail

On the beautiful island of Oahu, there are many breathtaking sights. One of these breathtaking sites is a hiking trail by the name of Judd Trail. This trail runs along the ridge of the Ko'olau Range and ends at the Pali Lookout. The view during the day as one is hiking Judd trail can be breathtaking and beautiful

However, at night, in the dark there is more to the story of Judd Trail then most people realize. A friend of mine, Megan, went to Judd Trail with two of her friends. Her friends sat at the beginning of the trail while Megan decided to take a walk on the trail and see what she could see even thought it was 3 am. Judd Trail is not a long trail by any means, It is just short of a mile. However, at places along the trail there some obstacles such as rock climbing, and at one spot you have to walk on the stones in the creek to get on the other side of the trail.

Megan kept walking until she reached the water fall, well out of sight from her two friends. Once at the water fall, Megan started to feel very strange inside. A feeling of total shock came over Megan. She felt nervous and very afraid because at the water fall, it became bright as day. She explained to me that it was just as light as it would be at 12 noon. Megan looked up to the sky to see what was going on and when she looked back down in front of her she saw an elderly Hawaiian women walking her dog coming in the direction that Megan was standing at. Megan was very shaken up by all this and she started to run away from the woman and the dog back up the trail to her friends.

As soon as Megan reached a spot close to where her friends were it became dark again. This frightened Megan even more. She continued to run  and jumped in her car where her friends were waiting for her. Her friends who were unaware of what just happened asked what was wrong but Megan couldn't even speak. As her friends tried to calm her down, Megan looked out the car window just in time to see this elderly women walk right through the car as if it weren't even there at all. Megan said the lady looked very angry and yelled something in Hawaiian  as she went through the car  Megan and her friends  who were both very afraid and spooked by this elderly Hawaiian lady. They could see this lady and her dog on the other side of the car through the window yelling at them and when they tried to start the car to get away, the car would not start until the Hawaiian lady and her dog just seemed to vanish in mid air.

Megan has told me she will never go to Judd Trail again. I told her that she more then likely did something to disrespect the spirits there. Judd Trail is a very sacred place to the Hawaiians and the spirits that dwell there. Judd Trail is their home and it should be treated with respect just as we would want anyone entering into our home to treat it with respect.

I have myself been to Judd Trail many times and yes, I have indeed seen and heard things there so, I have no problem with believing the experience that Megan had while at Judd trail.

Animals Ability to Sense Paranormal Activity

Most animals have senses that are much more keen than our own human senses, and many of them have senses that humans do not even have. It is well known that many animals know when there is something paranormal with them, from a common house cat hissing or following something unseen passing trough the room. Dogs, horses, birds and I am sure a lot of other animals also have the ability to sense things that most humans never would. I have myself watched as my cat respond to what would been a spectral hand trying to pet it's back making her crunching down and move away.

Cats
Felines are well known for senses among these a superb hearing, excellent sense of smell, known electromagnetic sensory abilities, low light vision which probably makes them able to see things even in regular light that we never would. When we surveyed our house for electromagnetic fields (EMF), we found out that the cats preferred to sleep in all the hot spots and all the cold spots in the electromagnetic field much as they love to bask in the sun or sleep close to a warm oven in the winter they also seemed to pick their sleeping areas according to the EMF, EMF is known to spike up with paranormal activity though consistent EMF fields are associated with our electronics, wirings and water pipes, proving that at least cats have the ability to directly sense EMF.

Dogs
Canines are also well known for a multitude of great senses from their superb sense of smelling, possible electromagnetic sensory abilities and a superb sense of hearing, several polynesians that I know claim that the wetness of a dogs eye make them able to see ghosts and if a human ever would wet their eyes with the dogs eye wetness they too could see what the dogs do.

Birds
Avians have very strong electromagnetic sensory ability as this is part of their natural navigation, using earths own magnetic fields as a form of GPS, birds also have a wider field of perception in the form being able to see in the ultra violet spectrum of light, which humans and most other animals do not have, many of them also have a excellent sense of smell.

Horses
Equines are naturally skittish and often refuse to cross into areas that have high EMF fields, they have superb senses in hearing and smell, but have a limited sight in low light making them even more dependent on using their other senses.

Cows
Bovines are smart herd animals and since I grew up on a farm I always had plenty of opportunity to notice how the cattle handled the paranormal, being a sensitive myself I would already know if I had sensed something and the cows, though mostly seems to ignore things of the paranormal definitely know it is there, and they act protectively of their herd if they feel the entity is harmful or evil. I always felt very safe with the cows around me since they would quickly ward off any evils as a herd, circling around those they want to protect and chase away anything evil.

Animal Affinity

I do not know what makes some seem to have a natural talent with animals, or as I like to put it, animal affinity, perhaps animals sense something beyond our normal human ones, the one thing I do know is that I have always had a way with animals of every kind, they seem to instantly trust me both wild and tame alike. Something very similar to this is Animal Links. Social Affinity or Empathy is also similar but instead deal with humans social interactions.

Like when I was about seven years old I remember my parents had been struggling for a good while with one of our young extremely stubborn cows, she refused to move in any way and it did not matter how much my mother and father pleaded, tried to scare her, pushed, prodded or pulled, she would not budge one single inch. Then when they had a break before getting ready to try again I went ahead, grabbed a handful of green leaves and held it in front of her, her eyes lit up, peaked with interest of what I might have in my hand, as I moved backwards she followed willingly into the fenced area.

This ability has made it possible for me to experience wild animals up close, like when I was visiting my grandmother back in Norway and a fox spiked by curiosity came all the way up to me and I knew it was not going to do any harm. In Hawaii I experienced the extremely skittish mongooses curiously stopping by to check out my shoes while walking home, and I was just keeping my normal walking pace, just stopping when the mongoose came up right in front of me.

No later than two days ago I had the opportunity to relocate a gecko that had found its way into our 8th floor apartment, usually geckos are quite skittish, and when my room mate had tried to catch it earlier it was running around like crazy, the gecko had settled on-top of a note-wheel as I approached it it did not budge so I went ahead picked up the note-wheel, placed it outside our room door on the floor and told it to wait there until i got my shoes on and was ready to carry it out, closed the door and returned a few minutes later and it was still there on-top of the note wheel, I picked it gently up and it kept a keen eye on me as i carried into the elevator and down outside into the grass.

The Barking Dogs at Waimanalo

It is well known that animals have keen senses, both in the form of the standard five and also very likely a few other that we don't have. My friend Jeff told me about this experience he had while living in Waimanalo, Oahu in Hawaii.

In Hawaiian folklore, it is said that if one put the water from the eyes of a dog into one own eyes one would be able to see what the dogs see, may it be ghosts, or other beings of the supernatural.

One time our dogs started barking and barking while running in circles around something, but there was nothing there, however at times it looked like there were the light of a lit cigarette in mid-air in the circled area that the dogs was running around.

I think this was another example of the menehunes using their ability to turn invisible to humans, however dogs and other animals are not fooled that easily.

Hero, the faithful dog

This is a story from Petter in Norway.
This is a recap of what happened after my black Labrador, Hero, died when he was 11 years old, and it spans over a period of 10 years. I have always been very skeptical and have never believed in reincarnation, but sometimes one would wonder.

In life Hero was a very normal black Labrador retriever and he used to follow me everywhere, faithfully having a daily chore of escorting me to my school bus, and waiting until It picked me up, He would make sure I was protected where ever I'd go. Then about 1 year after he died of old age, one of our cats gave birth to a female black kitten. In all our years this was the only time any of our many farm cats got a black kitten. Jokingly we remarked hey she looks a bit like Hero, she even have his white flag shaped spot on her chest. We named the kitten Euphra and she was always a bit odd, I never heard her meow and she would run not like any of our other cats, and we often said jokingly she must be a reincarnation of Hero, since her behavior was more like a dog than a cat, but still always considered this to be more a coincidence than anything else. (see Petter's other post in this blog about coincidences)

 

A few years later Euphra passed away and I moved to Tromsø to study, I always walked a lot, and during the first year I often saw this one kid about 7 or 8 years old playing along in this one part I passed while walking to or from the University. Then one day the kid stopped me and asked where my dog was, he insisted he had seen me walk by with my dog almost every day now for over a year. I told him he must be mistaken since I did not have any dogs, though I do walk by almost every day. The kid was very persistent and continued telling me what the dog looked like even describing the unique flag shaped white spot on his chest, a perfect description of Hero my old dog from years earlier. It does make you wonder if there really are something more, and if so it seemed my old dog Hero was still with me even 10 years after he passed away.

The Menehune of Waimanalo

I just got this story from Jeff in Hawaii, Oahu.
When I was 18 years old I lived and worked at a banana farm up in the mountain ridge of Waimanalo, whenever we moved deeper into the forest we felt like we were at the mercy of the Menehunes, which in Hawaiian mythology is described as a people, as dwarfs in size, living in the deep forests and hidden valleys of Hawaii, the Menehune are though to sometimes shape-shift and appear in animal form.

Higher up the nearby old hiking trail we had a secret off beat spot which one could only get to by crawling through a 10 feet thicket of forest before entering a area of Strawberry Guava which was about 25 long in order to get to our spot of pakalolo. This time I was up there all by myself and it was 5pm, I had just entered the area of Strawberry Guavas I got this odd feeling of being watched from behind, and a strong feeling of a presence, as I turned I noticed a black dog about 12 feet away staring at me, at first I thought it was a wild dog, but I also had this eerie feeling it was something else, and what happened next I have no rational explanation to, I watched as the black dog moved 6 feet to the right towards a strawberry guava with a trunk about 1 inch thick as I watched the dog move behind the tree it did not come out on the other side. I walked over to the tree where the dog disappeared and could not find any trace of it.

Another time while I was up at the same path with a few of my friends we all got this eerie feeling of a presence, and we heard a distant soft drum beat, we moved over to a stream nearby again feeling more eerie as we looked over the edge we spotted what looked like a yellow tribal feather flume. At this point I got this feeling something ominous was about to happen, as a branch fell over us, we started running and I stumbled over some ancient barbed wire, ruining my pants and as I was there trapped I felt like something was breathing heavily in my neck. I we ran quickly back to the trail and returned home, scared, bruised and battered but luckily only lightly harmed.
