The Kaneohe Morgan's Corner part I The Dawn "Deedee" Murder Spot

Entrance to Auloa Street on foot, from Pali Highway. Courtesy of Kaleo, UH publications

This one in from my good friend Joe  of Oahu Ghost Tours.

Kionaole/Auloa Rd...
the Kaneohe Morgan's Corner, the place where supposedly workers found over 1,000 human skulls while building it, known by many many ghost hunters as a "Kapu" place, even for ghost hunting.  This is one of my personal stories of the happening on that road one night. While being a guide for 26 people.

As we got out of the vans that night and started up Robert, my friend and coworker, wishes me luck and tells me to be careful tonight. I figure same ole, same ole, shaking bushes, hot spots, foot steps, and possibly the usual running back to the vans. It is amazing how many people try to convince themselves that the footsteps and rustling they hear is only "the other guide who is supposedly watching the van *wink *wink". As if we would venture out into that area alone, as if we would actually hide alone in the bushes.

As we start up, away from the only source of light on that road, a solitary streetlamp, I can't put all the memories of that place out of my mind. Even watching the vans by yourself OUTSIDE the place can get creepy, with the voices coming out of the bush and constant breaking of twigs, as if someone stepped on them. I'm the lucky one, going up with 26 people into a very dark place... at least I'm not by myself.

We go around the first turn and then start to relate a story of a tragic murder back in 1974, the murder of a young girl from Kailua named Dawn "Deedee" , at the place that was supposed to be where her body was found face down in the mud with a bullet through her head. As I start telling the story I notice how hot and humid it is, you can see the humidity forming on the foreheads of people and glistening off whatever ambient light my flashlight provides. As I get halfway through the story I notice there is a cold spot to my left, extremely cold. This was enough to make me pause and get chicken skin but I choose not to say anything about it, figuring that this is the ghost of Dawn and that she would prefer if I didn't let 26 people stick their hands into her area to feel the cold spot.

Try as I might to keep this to myself, there was a local girl in the group who stopped me and tells me "That girl that you're talking about?  She's on your left right now, looking at you and listening to you". Great, there goes any secrets. This girl apparently looks as shocked as I do, she just realized that she had the gift to see ghosts. What a place to start seeing ghosts! I look towards the cold spot and tell the cold spot to please correct me if I'm telling something wrong, or please let me know if you would like me to stop telling your story. Nothing happened, except now people moved over and started feeling the cold spot everywhere until, inevitably, it disappears. As I finish the story and allow the people to ask questions or take pictures for like 2 minutes, I notice that this local girl isn't saying much, or moving much.  Her boyfriend comes up to me, panic clear in his voice, saying. "Brah.... someting wrong wit my girlfriend! She not moving cuz! Brah help her!". He pulls me through the crowd up to her, and realizes that the air around her is now freezing cold. He starts freaking out more "Brah, she's freezing! Look! You can see her breath!" as he shines the light in her face you could see the misty smoke coming out of her mouth every time she exhales.  I ask her if she's okay, and she just shakes her head slightly. I ask her if she wants this entity to leave, and she nods slightly. Panicking now, I have no idea what to do... I'm a storyteller not a priest! I follow my gut and listen to my senses. They're telling me that this isn't a ti-leaf waving, salt throwing, yelling in Hawaiian, moment. This entity is Dawn, and she's a good ghost, lonely perhaps but nothing evil that I should repel. I ask out loud for Dawn to please leave this girl alone, telling Dawn that this isn't the way to make friends, and she's scaring the heck out of this girl. Immediately the cold spot leaves. Truly an awesome experience, and seeing as how we have had an experience with the paranormal, I look at the group and ask them if they're ready to leave now? I always try to leave it up to the group, so if anything happens, its not my fault. They (even the girl who just had the experience) look up excited, and say. "Lets keep going!".

You would figure that logic would win out... if A, then B right? If there are ghosts here, which we have clearly witnessed, then what about the stuff I told them before? What about the people that have gotten choked, at least once in a month, at the location where Dawn was found murdered (she was choked before she was shot)? What about the heavy, oppressive feeling hanging in the air, as if ready to suffocate you? I silently curse for giving them the option, and then sigh and cautiously lead them up the old abandoned road further in.

As we start walking, the place really becomes alive.  Bushes moving, branches breaking behind us.. on our sides... the heaviness increases with each step. The group seems to be loving every step of it, feeding off of it, as if they convinced themselves that this is a haunted house-type ride and everything is fake, after all nothing bad can happen in Hawaii right?  I stop to tell them the story of Morgan's Corner, about Terese Wilder's murder, etc. etc.  As I'm about 3/4 of my way through the story, the local girl grabs me by my wrists and pulls me over to the other side of the road without a word as to why. I shrug it off, I'm here for the sole purpose of storytelling and I'm going to finish this story as fast as I can. If I go looking for stuff, I may just find something. If i look for something every time i go up to a certain place, then it gives them the right to come looking for me. In fact, it was here a few years ago with a bunch of friends that I made the flashlight rule which goes, "The light is for seeing where you're walking... not for looking at whats shaking the bushes, cuz you look, you might see".  That night, years ago, we did see... an old lady's face about 7  feet high in the air above the california grass.

I finish the story about Ms Wilder, and then ask the girl why she moved me.  She tells me that she saw something moving in the bushes as I began the story, and it kept coming closer and closer in the bushes, she pulled me to the side when she saw it step out of the bushes and walk right towards me less then 10 feet away. I gulp as I see the people to either sides of her nodding in agreement, fear clear on their faces. I dare to ask for the description of this 'shadow'.  She tells me that this shadow stood about maybe 7 feet tall, darker then the pitch black, since she saw it moving in the bush, and was a man for most part... except for his head which resembled a dog or wolf.

Now my jaw literally drops open and fear begins to take a hold inside. The people who saw this apparition, don't understand the full meaning of it... the WHO it is. Before I ask them if they are ready to go back to the vans yet, I decide to tell them a little bit about this shadow whom perfectly fits the description of the infamous half-man half-dog cannibal, Kaupe. I tell them that at one time, Kaupe filled the entire island with terror at the mere mention of his name. As I'm done relaying what information I know about him, I then decide to ask the group what their wishes are... we have a 3rd location not too far away, or we can turn around and head back.  As always I leave it to the group. I'm a bit shocked when a few of the people in the back (who didn't see the shadow) decide that this haunted house ride isn't over!  They want to continue... the people in the front are clearly undecided, but choose to go with the group. At this point I call Robert at the vans and tell him to get the vans started up, turned facing away, and leave the doors open, to allow for a faster escape. Reluctantly, I take them up.  I figure that I need to test my courage as well if I'm going to continue doing a job like this.

As the bushes start to shake a little here, a little there, and as a branch breaks, falling down right in front of us...  I look at the group and think "This is what they want... no one can complain about being scared".  As we walk up I ponder the foolhardiness of the group, myself now included since I continue to take them up.  I say a few silent prayers for safety and protection and continue towards our final destination. We arrive at "the tree".  One of the infamous trees that makes Morgan's Corner so infamous, I say "one of the trees" because its the tree that seems to make the place haunted.  We have over 12 Morgan's Corners on this island.... all because of "the tree".  I start the story about the tree.... the couple whom decades ago were making out parked under it.... when it started to rain .... seeing the car battery was dead the boyfriend leaves alone to find help and..... CRAAAAAAAAACK!  A big branch snaps in half in the back of the group and we all jump.  I walk to the back of the group, making sure that any branches breaking were done by people in the group, and that all sounds are accounted for.  As I get to the back of the group however, all the men are now white-faced with a look of shock.  I ask them who broke the branch, and they all point into the bushes behind them....

As I walk over to investigate, to find the culprit, I keep the flashlight off because I really don't want to see what might be in the bush. I lean over, with my face about a foot away from the leaves, scanning the ground for something that I can't see... when from over my head.... less then a foot away from my face..... I hear a loud, unceasing, dark growl emanating from the bush. The chicken skin rushes across my body as the blood flows to my head, making everything seem as if it were slow motion. In a split second, options run through my mind in what I should do, not excluding turning around and screaming all the way back to the van. I realize however, that this is my test. This is my initiation, to see whether or not I can handle this job. I start throwing salt at the bush as I'm whacking the bush with my ti-leaf and yelling Hawaiian words at it. The growling turns into snarling and picks up in volume as the bush shakes more violently, the nauseating heat above my head builds and the horrible odor coming from the bush intensifies. I yell louder and throw more salt, as the growling and snarling picks gets louder and it appears as if the whole side of the mountain is now alive and threatening to swallow us whole.

Common sense finally kicks in as I see that the yelling, salt and ti leaves are provoking it rather then deterring it. I stop what I'm doing as the growling continues, I look at the bush in front of me, and I say loudly and clearly, "I come here to tell stories, nothing more. I come to share the other side of Hawaii with people who are interested, and if you want to hurt us then shame on you, we are doing nothing to harm you!  If you want us to leave, then its not me you have to scare, its the group. They are the ones who control how far in we go, so they are the ones you have to convince to leave!" I hear a guy behind me ask "What did he just say!?". I turn around, and head back to where I was before I was interrupted, to continue the story. I find myself having to almost yell over the growling as I finish my story, not for long though, because about 5 seconds later people started to run away saying that they want to leave. I was the first one out. As I jump over the concrete barrier keeps out more then cars, I hear a loud *CRRRACK* in the back of the group and girls screaming. I run back to see whats up, to find 2-3 girls on the ground with cut up knees from falling. They told me that as they went around the turn, some enormous dark shadow jumped out at them, breaking an entire log, and then disappearing into the shadows once again. That log as far as I know is still there, broken in half.

As we leave the site, a lady in my van asks me "Do you know why that happened?".  I tell her I have no idea why... she continues, "Its because you stopped smoking.  Didn't you?".  There is no way for this lady to know that I had quit smoking for 3 days prior to the tour. She continues, "Because you quit smoking... they can come closer to you now. Smoking tobacco is exactly what the Native Americans do... its called the Peace Pipe, an offering of peace to the spirits". Well there went quitting smoking, I went straight to the store and bought a pack of cigarettes. Talk about a unique reason for not quitting.

Also as an added note, I credit my reaction to the growling to the many years I've rode a motorcycle.  There are two types of people in this world, those who react and then think about it later, and those who think about it and then react. On a motorcycle if you are the former, you're dead. Example of this is when a bird flew into my helmet and almost knocked me off the bike at 30 mph. If i freaked out I'd be another statistic. Instead I slowed down, pulled to the side, put down my kick stand, then I freaked out.

The Ringing of the Phone

Back in the early 70's, My sister and her young son moved into an old house down in the southern part of the country. As I said, the house was indeed old but, it was only for a year until her husband would complete his military commitment over seas and then would be back home and a civilian once again. So she figured the old house would suit her purpose for a year and besides the owner was asking a very low amount of monthly rent.

My sister noticed that there was no phone in the house and only one phone jack and that was in the living room. She said she had to wait until pay day to get a phone installed. She had an especially busy day at work that day and was very tired when she got home. later that night, she put her son to bed and she went to get ready for bed herself.  As she was getting ready to turn in for the night she heard a phone ring. She thought she just imagined  it because it only rang once and, she already knew there was no phone in the house. She went to bed and just as she was falling off to sleep she heard a phone ring again. She didn't get much sleep that night because of the sound of a ringing phone. It actually woke her son up and together they searched the entire house for a phone including the basement and attic and there there was no phone to be found.

The next day she complained to the landlady about it and the woman told her why she heard a phone ring all night long. She told my sister the story of what happened in that house several years before. The landlady said that her parents built that house many years ago and that her mom and dad were married 50 years when her mother was murdered in that house. One day her father came home from his doctor appointment and as he walked into the house, he found that his wife had been murdered during his absence. by strangulation. According to the landlady, there were no signs of forced entry so his wife must have let the intruder into the house.

The elderly man's  wife had been strangled. The intruder used the phone cord to kill her. When he got into the living room, his wife was laying dead on the floor with the phone core still wrapped around her neck. A lengthy police investigation ended with no suspect being arrested.

The landlady went on to say that after about two weeks since his wife was murdered, the elderly man had the phone taken out of the house so he wouldn't have to look at it anymore. Once the phone was out, the elderly man started to hear a phone ring in the house at night. He swore it was his late wife trying to call him from beyond and, she would not have known that the phone had been taken out. He told the landlady about all of this and she said it was just his mind playing tricks on him and that it would all go away soon.

The elderly man missed his wife of 50 years very much and he thought his daughter was correct, that the ringing of the phone every hour late at night was all in his mind. Now, I know it wasn't because my sister and her son both experienced the same thing the elderly man did.

A few nights after the elderly man's daughter told him it was all in his mind, the lonely elderly man was sitting in his living room and once again the phone would start to ring on the hour, every hour. Finally, he could not take it anymore and he pulled a gun out and shot himself in the head. The neighbors heard a gun shot and called the police and an ambulance. The man wad dead when the police and ambulance arrived.

As far as was it the elderly man's wife trying to call him from the other side... I do not know. I often wonder that if that were actually  the case, then why did a the sound of a phone continue to ring long after his death when my sister moved into the house? What I do know is that a sound of a phone ringing happened every night, every hour on the hour even though there was no phone in the house. My sister did indeed move out of that old house. Since then I believe the old house has been torn down along with a few other houses in that area, due to being old and abandon.

His Mother's Wedding Ring

I once worked with a young man that was married and had one child. His name is Danny. We became instant friends at work, when we went out we would be taking his wife and my gf along and do things like bowling, movies and BBQ's. The four of us became very good friends.

I didn't know this at the time but, Danny's mother had been murdered several years ago when he was like 7 years old. At this time he was a 27 year old outgoing, friendly, and caring person. On night Danny's wife called and was asking for help. She told me that all day long Danny had been walking around talking to his dead mother and she could not seem to bring him out of it. His wife was very concerned and said that if either her or their little girl would say anything to Danny, He just ignored and continued walking all around talking to his deceased mother. His wife was beginning to think that Danny was loosing it. My girl friend and I went directly over to Danny's house. Once there we found Danny walking all through the one story home talking to what seemed to be his deceased mother.

I walked over to Danny and ask him if he was OK and I put my hand on his shoulder, he just kept on walking and talking like I was not even there. He would walk around and talk to her and then would be quiet as he waited for her reply. Now Danny did not do drugs and, he didn't drink either. I ask his wife if he was on any medication and she answered no.

I kept hearing Danny asking his mother about a ring. I quickly called his sister who lives in another state and ask her if she knew what he was talking about. Her answer was that when their mother was buried, his sister put a ring on her finger for her to be buried with. She put the ring (The mother's wedding ring) on her finger right before the casket was closed and locked, several people saw this. His sister also told me that after the service, Danny said to her that his their mom had promised him the ring. His mother told him that when he became older she would give him the ring for good luck & love in his life. It really was the only thing Danny had to remember his mother by.

I still thought Danny was loosing it  and I told my girl friend to call 911. As she did that, she came back from the phone call asking what was this ring she found on the table beside the phone. When Danny saw the ring he started to cry and just kept thanking his mother for it. The ambulance arrived and did take Danny to the hospital and he was diagnosed with having an extreme anxiety spell.

Now here is the thing... Three days later when Danny's sister arrived she confirmed that the ring  my girl friend found was indeed their mother's wedding ring. However, their mother was indeed buried with the ring on her finger.

So, how did the ring get there on the phone stand? Was Danny really talking to his mother and was she really answering him back? All I know for sure is  as I stated before, Danny;s sister did confirm the ring my girl friend found was indeed Danny's mother's wedding ring. We also know, the ring was on his mother's finger at the time of burial.  guess we will never know where that ring came from.

House Blessings - Your Home is Your Temple, A Sanctuary for You

This is my account of the power of house blessings, and the peace of mind one could have in ones home when it is kept physically and spiritually in order, and as such protected against evil forces of all sorts.

In Tromsø a few years ago I felt like my home was becoming desecrated, there was this one heinous video circling on the web showing people getting murdered in the most horrible way, and my boyfriend kept watching them all over all day, whenever he had friends over his first action would be to show the uncensored video which one could not see in fullness on Norwegian TV.

Soon he would be watching the site more and more, it kept building up his hate, and it felt like it was spreading filling the home, making it defiled. Then after one week of pleading him to stop I went ahead and did a house blessing. At this time, one of his friends was over eager to be the next one to see the murders in all it's evilness. I left them alone in the computer room and moved over to the South corner of our kitchen and started praying, I prayed for protection of our home, to keep evil out of it in all it's forms, to bless our home and bring back the sanctity of mind and sanctity of our home. It felt like a spark of positive power spread from the Kitchen and illuminated our home pushing out any darkness that was working it's way in.

After 15 minutes or so it felt like our home was spiritually rejuvenated again, and soon after my boyfriend and our mutual friend came over to the kitchen. I asked them if they had seen the video, the reply i got pleased me "No, for some reason we spent the last 15 minutes trying to get it up, it would not load anymore, strange since it worked perfectly all of this week before". Not only did he never mention the site after the blessing it seemed to be like it had been removed from his mind since he did not try to watch any of the videos again.

This is not the only time that I have experienced the effect of house blessings, but this is the most instant and deep lasting one I have experienced. Here there was not used sage or incense for the cleansing, as in the ritual of Smudging (Read entry Sage used for cleansing of the Soul and Protection against Evil Spirits)

A Haunted Condo-building in Waikiki

Photo by PJ 2005 Waikiki beach with Sky-rise Hotels and Condo buildings in the background

This is not a pleasant account of my experience but, the paranormal is not always pleasant. About 5 years ago, I worked as a security guard in a condo building close to Waikiki beach in Honolulu, Hawaii. I did the regular security patrols and what have you. I was doing that job in the same building for about 6 months and during my patrol one of the rooms I had to go into was the trash room, a large room that had trash dumpsters filled with all the trash from the tenants of the building. People would bag up their trash and throw it down the trash shoot and, it would go directly into the big dumpster.

For some reason every time I would go into that room, I would start to feel very uneasy. I always felt strange in that room and I always felt like someone was in there watching me. I could just feel someone's eyes on me' Although I knew I was the only one in the room. One evening the chief of security was on property and he and I were talking. I told him for some reason, I felt uneasy whenever I was in the trash room during my patrols. That is all I told him. I never mentioned to him that I also felt like there was someone in the room watching me.

He looked at me and started telling me why I felt so uneasy in there. He told me that many years ago a man and his wife lived in one of the condo apartments in the building. One night the man came home and for some unknown reason, this man killed his wife and chopped her arms, legs and, head off and put her in trash bags and stuck the bags in the trash shoot.  When the maintenance crew went into the trash room the next morning to take out the filled dumpster, one of them saw a trash bag with either an arm or leg sticking out of it and one of the crew called the police. As he told me this he also stated that they found the poor woman's body all except for her head. her head has never been found to this day. He said to me that a few other guards said they felt a strange feeling of being watched when they were in the trash room as well

Now I understood why I felt like I was being watched whenever I go into that room. Maybe this poor woman was there in spirit just looking at me and watching me hoping I would maybe help her find the rest of her body, or maybe her spirit was afraid to move on because part of her was still missing.

The Haunted Farm House

Back about thirty years ago in Gettysburg, Pa when I was just starting to explore the paranormal, a friend of mine was a noted paranormal investigator in the area. Although, back then, the paranormal field was very small and not a very popular field to get into or at least in my area of the country it wasn't. At any rate, my friend invited myself and another friend of mine to go on an investigation with him and a few of his colleagues. This farmhouse that we were to help investigate was owned by my investigators friend's family from way back long before the battle of Gettysburg. Now this house was not on the battlefield as we know it today but was close to it.

My investigator friend (Frank) was very eager to go into this farm house and try to find out at-least some of what was reported to be going on there. One particular hot and humid Friday evening in the middle of August, Frank and his 4 man crew and my friend and I drove to the property and back the Long Lane to his family's farm house that had not been occupied for over 50 years. Even though it was nine in the evening and dark, you could tell that the farm house was in bad shape. As we entered the house with our recorders, cameras, flash lights and, lanterns, we all decided to stay together in the house and not spread out. The inside of the house was all cob webs and smelled moldy.

In the kitchen area of the house or at least where and old time stove was, there was a cellar door one that opened up when you lifted it up. and that was about it for that area. off from the kitchen was a sitting room and  there was a wooden chair in that room and a small table that was really in bad shape. and an old, what looked like what used to be a rug. The upstairs was just two rooms a large one that was the master bedroom and a much smaller room. As we were in the kitchen area I swear to you, the cellar door would at times open just a bit by itself and slam shut. We had a hard time getting upstairs due to the steps rotting and breaking but, we made it up there anyway. The smaller bed room was pretty much intact and nothing much seem to happen there. However, in the master bedroom. it was cold and this was in the middle of August and there was a feeling of fright, despair, and sadness. My friend and I and two of the crew got a very sick in our stomachs and had to leave the area right away.

We headed back down stairs and we all saw the cellar door open and slam shut a few more times and that was it for my friend and I. We went and waited in the car until the rest of the crew and Frank came out. it only took about two minutes for them to leave after we did.

The very next day while researching the farm house, we all discovered that back many years ago, the family that lived there was murdered. A man and his wife and a small child. There bodies were reportedly buried in the cellar.

Frank always knew that there was a family murdered there but he didn't know exactly when or why. We all knew that when we went in but we never expected to feel the fright and sadness and despair we all felt in the master bedroom and to this day I feel that the cellar door was opening and slamming shut because the bodies were buried in the cellar. That my friends is what spiked my interest in the paranormal.

When You Know Something Is Wrong

Some years ago I lived in Lubbock,Texas. A very good friend of mine was a reporter there for a local television station and also my friend doubled as a camera man. A lot of nights I would ride all over Lubbock with my friend as we searched for something news worthy. Nothing but shoplifting and drunk driving ever really happened, a few fist fights now and then but all and all, on the nights my friend worked it was usually pretty quiet and boring.

One evening right before dark my friend picked me up and we were going to stop at a fast food place for some food and be on our way driving across the city looking for something news worthy. As I got in the car, I got a strange feeling. I looked over at my friend and said that I felt something had happened somewhere in the city and that I felt it was a horrible thing and that we would not be bored at all tonight. My friend just looked at me and said "yeah right".

We weren't even finished our food when my friend got a call from the station to go into South Lubbock, the station gave her the address and off we went still not knowing why we were told to go to that address. As we arrived we saw a lot of flashing lights from an ambulance, police cars and the coroners van. What we had been sent to was a murder scene.

If my memory serves me well, it was the home of either a school teacher or a principle. The deceased was a women laying on a bed and only dressed from the waist down. To this day I do not know if they ever found the killer(s).

That was not the first time i could sense trouble. Once I was in my room and i could tell that something was wrong with the light fixture that hung from the ceiling. It had been there for many years and all was always OK with it but I knew something was wrong. About an hour after I got the feeling that something was wrong with it, it came crashing down to the floor.

Another time I had a very strong feeling that something was wrong with my sister. I didn't know what was wrong but I did know something was not right.
My mother called my sister later and found out that earlier that day my sister suffered a miscarriage.
