Guided by Lydia, the Spirit of My Great-Grandmother

I have always had a keen ability to know things about plants, just as explained in the entry Plant Affinity, more specifically I think I partially inherited my plant Affinity from my own great-grandmother Lydia, the other half of my skill and uncanny knowledge of herbal lore I know come directly from interacting with my great-grandmother that guide and watch over me.

I have never known my great-grandmother since she passed away before I was even born, but like me she was a psychic, a scholar of her time in all sorts of plants and medicinal uses there of. Lydia was also known for her strong will and for being way ahead of her time in many things.

Long ago my great-grandmother Lydia told my mother Siw, who was still only a young girl, that she would have a child that would have a future in research and plants like her. Lydia was so certain that I had a great destiny ahead, that she set up a trust-fund, with some money to be released when I turned 18, and also told my parents that she wanted for me to inherit all her money when she passed away, and that it was already set up to place all her money into the trust-fund.

Just like she had foreseen I went into science, doing research on plants, unfolding the mysteries of genetics, I do believe she saw something and went ahead with that hunch. The money from the trust combined with the inheritance has made it possible for me to pursue research of plant genetics and biochemistry.

The strongest example I have of how I felt great-grandmother Lydia helping me was a few years ago when I almost died, and my life literally flashed before my eyes (read: When My Life Flashed Before My Eyes ) aiding me in finding out what I needed in order to help myself get better.

Ronnie's Credit Cards

My younger cousin Ronnie is a real good guy. He is smart, kind, and would never do anything to hurt anyone. However, Ronnie always did have one major problem, Ronnie could never save money. If Ronnie had a nickel in his pocket or in his bank account, he just had to spend it somewhere. This always caused a rift between Ronnie and his parents. As Ronnie became of age, he applied for three different credit cards and, he was approved for all three of them. Well Ronnie was on top of the world. Little did he know that in less then two years from then, His world would come crashing down. He went out and  maxed all three of the cards out. As it turned out he couldn't afford to pay the credit cards off.

Well, Ronnie's dad became very angry and even though his dad knew it was not the best thing for Ronnie, His dad paid all three of Ronnie's credit cards off for him. He tried his best to get Ronnie to understand the importance of saving money and not spending every cent he made. About two weeks after Ronnie's dad paid his credit cards off for Ronnie. His dad had a heart attack and died. The death of his dad really upset Ronnie and he knew at that point he had to straighten up and fly right because he knew if he didn't, he would sink and sink hard.

Ronnie did well for about six months and then a little at a time  he got back into his old ways. All three of his credit cards were maxed out again. Ronnie didn't know what to do and a bankruptcy was out of the question. He tried to borrow from the bank but they turned him down for a loan. One night when Ronnie went to bed he spoke to his dad by way of prayer and ask him what to do and he told his father he was so sorry for getting that far in debt and if he could get out of debt this time he would never again get in debt and  then he just fell off to sleep.

When Ronnie woke up the next morning, he got ready for his day and as he grabbed his wallet to see if he had any money for his morning coffee, he noticed all three credit cards were not in his wallet. He looked around and on a table  he saw all three credit cards cut in half. When he went for the mail, two of his credit card's had a zero balance on his statements.

He knew his mother couldn't have paid them off as she really had no money to speak of. Even though ronnie still had one credit card balance to pay off and he did over time. Ronnie is sure that somehow his dad paid the credit cards off even though he had passed on and no one can prove he didn't so, I have heard of stranger things happening. Ronnie never again had any credit cards. However, his dad made sure he knew the importance of saving his money.

Itching hands and Other Financial Old Wives Tales

In Norway there is an old saying that when your mouth start itching in the end this is a sign that money is on its way and with money, comes food and since food goes into your mouth it cause it to itch as a premonition of what is yet to come. Another one my mother and my grandparents always told me and anyone else they see letting this happen that they should never leave a loaf of bread on its back, it is supposed to be a certain sign, or opening up for bad financial times to come. In the US I heard they also talk about keeping loafs of bread on it's backside not because of money, but because of it being a symbol of life, and putting it on its back is putting your back on God.

When I went to the east coast of the United States I ran into others who believe  about money, and premonitions and omens thereof. My family here told me that having the palms of my hands itching and the cause was not of eczema, mosquito bites or other type of irritation, it was a certain sign that money would be on it's way. These types of sayings or old wise tales have always interested me, most of them have some grains of truth in them.

A modern concept in this category is chain letters that promise financial success, or financial disaster if one break the chain. Money seem to be a favored theme both back in ancient times, and in our modern world, as it is such a important part of our lives.

Here is another one I found interesting when I got to the US. Since I had never heard anything similar about it before, other than in Donald Duck cartoon stories. If you find a penny and it is heads up, it is a penny of luck, but it would not work its luck before you give it away to someone. This is a much more general saying but in our materialistic world money and luck is considered to be closely connected. This one is also about pennies and it is unquestionable true. Wrap a penny in paper and carry it with you and you will never go broke. True it is not much but as long as you have it with you it would be self-fulfilling.

Another one I found people talking about, if you keep picking up burnt matches instead of leaving them around one will find money. While  I am on the subject of burning, I also found one that goes like this, while peeling onions instead of throwing away the peel, burn it and you will never go empty handed.

Other sayings are more directed on what one could do on specific days like At Midnight of New Years Eve, while holding money in one hand, kneel down and pray and you shall have money the remaining of the new year. Or If you make money on Monday, keep it and the amount will increase during the rest of the week.

Shooting stars seem to be another universal topic, in Norway they are often surrounded by mystery and a promise to be able to grant wishes. Here is a different example of the powers attributed to shooting stars. If you see a shooting star, say Money, MONEY, Money and you will soon receive some.

The last example I am bringing up is this one, if you see bubbles in the rain, you will receive a lot of money. I would love to hear other examples of old wives tales, sayings or promises like the ones I brought up, as I mentioned before, I always found this interesting, and it does bring a deeper understanding how people used to think, and still do in the form of the modern urban myths, as talked about in my earlier entry 13th Myth or reality, though I think that in the cases when the sayings come true, it is more coincidental than anything else.

June 2008 - The Shining - Book of Luck

I just got this e-mailed to me from Sarah in Boston, Massachusetts, after reading the story about the possessed role play game book, she felt compelled to share her own book related experience with us.

This happened to me back in 2008, because my mother was too ill to work and my salary was not enough to pay everything for both of us we were $400 short to pay our monthly rent. I felt depressed, but since I have always loved books, I thought maybe it would cheer me up some by walking over to the second-hand bookstore across the street from our apartment. While I was checking out a shelf I felt drawn to a book that looked brand new, it was protected by a plastic wrapping, but the style was older, it was a book I already knew well, The Shining by Stephen King, who happens to be one of my favorite authors.

When I examined it closer I noticed it said, "A new novel by the author of CARRIE and 'SALEM'S LOT" which got me thinking excitingly, hey that cannot be TRUE, this is NOT a NEW novel, AND the cover is different on than The Shining that I READ before. I could not find any pricing on the book so I decided to ask how much it was, to my surprise, the young clerk told me that he would sell it to me for $10, just what I had on me at the moment. So I seized the moment and bought the since I had a suspicion that this might be a first edition book, still unopened and in mint condition.

When I got home I checked it out and got it confirmed that this was really a first edition of "The Shining" from 1977 the very same year that I was born, I did not hesitate and placed it up on e-bay for online auction, I was overwhelmed by happiness when the auction ended at $501, enough to cover the rest of my rent and have some left to take care of my mother. Soon I was contacted about a new better paid job, and I truly believe that all these sudden events of luck came with the book as an answer to our prayers.
