Huaka'i Pō - The Nightmarchers of Hawaii

There are actually a few different kind of nightmarchers in Hawaii, depending what type of warriors the night marchers trail were originally made up of, there are also several variants of the legends on the processions and what would happen to those that encounter these wandering warriors of the past.

Many Nightmarcher trails are well known among these in Laie, and in the Manoa Valley. People report everything from hearing distant drums, barking of the warriors dogs, seeing the light of their torches farther up the trail, and some even say they have seen the night marchers marching with full warriors entire. There are many dangers that are supposed to be connected to being spotted by the Night marchers, and how the only way to avoid the dangers are to show total respect, and even then one are said to require a relative in the Nightmarchers procession in order to not be whisked away, or fall dead to the ground right were one stands.

The Night marches or in Hawaiian (Huaka'i Pō) travel through out the islands of Hawaii to do as they always done and, that is protect their home. They are the ghost of Hawaii's warriors. On the nights of Kane Lu lono, Akua or, on the night of kaloa they leave their burial grounds and they march all through many sections of the islands. The Nightmarchers  will march out to battles of the past and they will also march out to several of the places that are considered grounds. Hawaii's Night Marchers leave their final resting places about sunset and will walk and march the islands of Hawaii until sunrise. I have also heard of a few daytime sightings. Daytime sightings are usually only witnessed when the Night Marches are going out to guide and escort a dying relative to the spirit world.

Right before the Night marchers come upon one, You can usually hear their drums beating and there have been reports of hearing chanting, dogs barking and one can see the Night Marchers torch lights from a distance. According to legend it is best to leave the area when you see or hear any of these things in to save yourself form death if seen by a Night marcher. However, if you don't have time to escape the Night Marchers, it is said that if you lay down, face down on the ground it is a show of respect and that the Night marchers (might not) harm you. Some even say that lying face down prevents the Night marchers from noticing you. However, I would rather leave the area if I had time to get away.

If you live in an area near the Nightmarchers trail and you hear the chanting, drums torch lights and a foul smell. You must go indoors to protect your self. If the Nightmarchers sees you, the only way to avoid death is to be in the bloodline of one of the Nightmarchers. if a member of the persuasion knows you and you are related in that family then, no harm will come to you or so the legends say.

On The Island of Oaho; Manoa Valley at the University of Hawaii Manoa Campus, Pali Highway in the majestic Koolau Mountains, at The Kamehameha Schools campus located in the Kapalama part, The Kualoa Ranch on the Windward side, Laie and at La Perouse Bay

The above mentioned are only a few of the places where Nightmarchers have been reported. However, there are many other locations where it is said that Hawaii's Night Marchers will visit. It is suggested that any night time visitors to any Night Marcher location, or even day time visitors, be very wary and alert!

Ullgolthr and Rallurgh - My Ultraterrestrial Pets

Illustration by PJ 2006, the perception to the author of Ullgolthr and Rallurgh can best be described as two small cats like these two blurred to the cameras eye.

What I am going to share with you now is one of the strangest experiences of my adult life here in Hawaii. It all happened the night I found out about Ullgolthr and Rallurgh, two cat like other dimensional animals that follow me around and cuddles up from the energy that I emit.

I remember this very clearly as this was the very night of summer solstice, and I had just assisted in an remote exorcism, this event and the extra energies that flow between dimensions on summer solstice opened up my mind to experience these two sweet creatures.

I had problems sleeping that night so I was still fully awake when I noticed the feeling of something close to my neck, as I looked down I noticed the two blurry cat like animals and as I sat up they jumped down onto the bed, both of them looked up to me confused it felt like they were wondering how did that happened. As I looked down at them it felt like I could read their minds and feel their confusion and this is what I got: Rallurgh he never noticed us before, while the other one was thinking come Ullgolthr lets leave him, we can come back tomorrow when he is more at ease.

I watched as both of them moved down from the bed, onto the floor stopped looked back at me while figuring out what to do next, shifting from blurred to solid and finaly phased out of our world. I Felt these were lesser beings more like inter-dimensional animals, that at times bask in our energies similar to how a cat like to bask in the sunlight, these would be close to the veil just out of our sentient worlds perception, just once in a while blending trough enough to be noticed.

Still I felt so full of energy that night that I did not go to sleep at all until the afternoon of the next day. I still feel Ullgolthr and Rallurgh's presence now when I know of their existance and know how to distinguish their unique form of energy from the rest of my surroundings.

Held Down (An Unwanted Visitor in the Night)

Years ago I lived in an old house nestled in the hills above Kalihi and in it was a ghost. We used to have friends over from time to time and soon enough they too saw the spirit in question, and since he was such a frequent visitor in our home we soon gave him the name Henry so he would feel like part of our family. 

Henry never did bother anyone although our overnight guests were forewarned about him. Even with that in mind they were always startled by the glowing white presence that would be standing in the room when they woke up in the middle of the night. One time a friend of mine, who was playing cards with us, actually saw him walking into one of the bedrooms. He had had a few drinks but I think he more or less sobered up right after that.

Henry never really bothered anyone, in fact he seemed to be going about his business like most spirits are want to do, popping out of nowhere and walking thru our hallways and stuff, I was even open minded enough to realize that in some very real way this was his home as much as ours maybe he was the former owner even!.

The years went on and all was the way it should be with life being very peaceful even with Henry showing up pretty much all the time except for two nights when something else came to visit our home. It was late into the evening the lights were off and we were all pretty much fast asleep when I Felt something pull me up to the surface from the comfortable tides of pleasant rest.

My room was as silent as can be considering the late hour and for a few moments that's all that was there with me until I felt someone pressing down on my body making me feel helpless. Groggy and terrified I managed to look off to my right and there was a large shadowy shape of a person watching me. My mind tried to slip back to that comfortable place where whoever this was could not get me. Oddly enough the moment I thought that and I slowly began to drift back to sleep it released me. 

Not long after that on another night it happened again, but this time the presence was much more insistent with scaring me and since I was greatly alarmed I had no choice but to face this dark presence. By instinct I started to pray and the dark figure eased off again and in a few more seconds the room went from a silent negative zone to a tranquil state.

To this day I recall those years living with a ghost who became almost like a shy friend and always a welcomed presence. And then I pause and wonder what that other spirit was on those two fright filled nights while living in that haunted house. And what it would have decided to do with its forceful intentions if left unchecked. 

In Hawaii we have a certain type of wandering ghost that likes to frequent both our fire stations as well as people's residence and they have a habit of pressing down on unsuspecting victims and also choking them thus the nick name of "choke neck" If that's what it was I’m glad it didn't get that far with me...
