The Kaneohe Morgan's Corner part I The Dawn "Deedee" Murder Spot

Entrance to Auloa Street on foot, from Pali Highway. Courtesy of Kaleo, UH publications

This one in from my good friend Joe  of Oahu Ghost Tours.

Kionaole/Auloa Rd...
the Kaneohe Morgan's Corner, the place where supposedly workers found over 1,000 human skulls while building it, known by many many ghost hunters as a "Kapu" place, even for ghost hunting.  This is one of my personal stories of the happening on that road one night. While being a guide for 26 people.

As we got out of the vans that night and started up Robert, my friend and coworker, wishes me luck and tells me to be careful tonight. I figure same ole, same ole, shaking bushes, hot spots, foot steps, and possibly the usual running back to the vans. It is amazing how many people try to convince themselves that the footsteps and rustling they hear is only "the other guide who is supposedly watching the van *wink *wink". As if we would venture out into that area alone, as if we would actually hide alone in the bushes.

As we start up, away from the only source of light on that road, a solitary streetlamp, I can't put all the memories of that place out of my mind. Even watching the vans by yourself OUTSIDE the place can get creepy, with the voices coming out of the bush and constant breaking of twigs, as if someone stepped on them. I'm the lucky one, going up with 26 people into a very dark place... at least I'm not by myself.

We go around the first turn and then start to relate a story of a tragic murder back in 1974, the murder of a young girl from Kailua named Dawn "Deedee" , at the place that was supposed to be where her body was found face down in the mud with a bullet through her head. As I start telling the story I notice how hot and humid it is, you can see the humidity forming on the foreheads of people and glistening off whatever ambient light my flashlight provides. As I get halfway through the story I notice there is a cold spot to my left, extremely cold. This was enough to make me pause and get chicken skin but I choose not to say anything about it, figuring that this is the ghost of Dawn and that she would prefer if I didn't let 26 people stick their hands into her area to feel the cold spot.

Try as I might to keep this to myself, there was a local girl in the group who stopped me and tells me "That girl that you're talking about?  She's on your left right now, looking at you and listening to you". Great, there goes any secrets. This girl apparently looks as shocked as I do, she just realized that she had the gift to see ghosts. What a place to start seeing ghosts! I look towards the cold spot and tell the cold spot to please correct me if I'm telling something wrong, or please let me know if you would like me to stop telling your story. Nothing happened, except now people moved over and started feeling the cold spot everywhere until, inevitably, it disappears. As I finish the story and allow the people to ask questions or take pictures for like 2 minutes, I notice that this local girl isn't saying much, or moving much.  Her boyfriend comes up to me, panic clear in his voice, saying. "Brah.... someting wrong wit my girlfriend! She not moving cuz! Brah help her!". He pulls me through the crowd up to her, and realizes that the air around her is now freezing cold. He starts freaking out more "Brah, she's freezing! Look! You can see her breath!" as he shines the light in her face you could see the misty smoke coming out of her mouth every time she exhales.  I ask her if she's okay, and she just shakes her head slightly. I ask her if she wants this entity to leave, and she nods slightly. Panicking now, I have no idea what to do... I'm a storyteller not a priest! I follow my gut and listen to my senses. They're telling me that this isn't a ti-leaf waving, salt throwing, yelling in Hawaiian, moment. This entity is Dawn, and she's a good ghost, lonely perhaps but nothing evil that I should repel. I ask out loud for Dawn to please leave this girl alone, telling Dawn that this isn't the way to make friends, and she's scaring the heck out of this girl. Immediately the cold spot leaves. Truly an awesome experience, and seeing as how we have had an experience with the paranormal, I look at the group and ask them if they're ready to leave now? I always try to leave it up to the group, so if anything happens, its not my fault. They (even the girl who just had the experience) look up excited, and say. "Lets keep going!".

You would figure that logic would win out... if A, then B right? If there are ghosts here, which we have clearly witnessed, then what about the stuff I told them before? What about the people that have gotten choked, at least once in a month, at the location where Dawn was found murdered (she was choked before she was shot)? What about the heavy, oppressive feeling hanging in the air, as if ready to suffocate you? I silently curse for giving them the option, and then sigh and cautiously lead them up the old abandoned road further in.

As we start walking, the place really becomes alive.  Bushes moving, branches breaking behind us.. on our sides... the heaviness increases with each step. The group seems to be loving every step of it, feeding off of it, as if they convinced themselves that this is a haunted house-type ride and everything is fake, after all nothing bad can happen in Hawaii right?  I stop to tell them the story of Morgan's Corner, about Terese Wilder's murder, etc. etc.  As I'm about 3/4 of my way through the story, the local girl grabs me by my wrists and pulls me over to the other side of the road without a word as to why. I shrug it off, I'm here for the sole purpose of storytelling and I'm going to finish this story as fast as I can. If I go looking for stuff, I may just find something. If i look for something every time i go up to a certain place, then it gives them the right to come looking for me. In fact, it was here a few years ago with a bunch of friends that I made the flashlight rule which goes, "The light is for seeing where you're walking... not for looking at whats shaking the bushes, cuz you look, you might see".  That night, years ago, we did see... an old lady's face about 7  feet high in the air above the california grass.

I finish the story about Ms Wilder, and then ask the girl why she moved me.  She tells me that she saw something moving in the bushes as I began the story, and it kept coming closer and closer in the bushes, she pulled me to the side when she saw it step out of the bushes and walk right towards me less then 10 feet away. I gulp as I see the people to either sides of her nodding in agreement, fear clear on their faces. I dare to ask for the description of this 'shadow'.  She tells me that this shadow stood about maybe 7 feet tall, darker then the pitch black, since she saw it moving in the bush, and was a man for most part... except for his head which resembled a dog or wolf.

Now my jaw literally drops open and fear begins to take a hold inside. The people who saw this apparition, don't understand the full meaning of it... the WHO it is. Before I ask them if they are ready to go back to the vans yet, I decide to tell them a little bit about this shadow whom perfectly fits the description of the infamous half-man half-dog cannibal, Kaupe. I tell them that at one time, Kaupe filled the entire island with terror at the mere mention of his name. As I'm done relaying what information I know about him, I then decide to ask the group what their wishes are... we have a 3rd location not too far away, or we can turn around and head back.  As always I leave it to the group. I'm a bit shocked when a few of the people in the back (who didn't see the shadow) decide that this haunted house ride isn't over!  They want to continue... the people in the front are clearly undecided, but choose to go with the group. At this point I call Robert at the vans and tell him to get the vans started up, turned facing away, and leave the doors open, to allow for a faster escape. Reluctantly, I take them up.  I figure that I need to test my courage as well if I'm going to continue doing a job like this.

As the bushes start to shake a little here, a little there, and as a branch breaks, falling down right in front of us...  I look at the group and think "This is what they want... no one can complain about being scared".  As we walk up I ponder the foolhardiness of the group, myself now included since I continue to take them up.  I say a few silent prayers for safety and protection and continue towards our final destination. The Blue Light Cemetery - Spring, Texas

It was the summer of 2005, my friends and I were young and daring. I had known for years that there was a supposedly haunted cemetery in our area, but had never gotten around to checking it out. A friend had mentioned that there had been some cult activity their throughout the 70's and 80's, which only made it that more luring. On a typical boring afternoon I managed to talk a friend into making the 30 minute drive into the boonies to check this place out! It was a good thing that we found The Blue Light Cemetery during the day, due to its remote location deep in Piney woods. After a lot of searching, we found ourselves at an overgrown locked gate marked no trespassing. Well then we turned around and went home. No, I am just yanking your chain because this is where our story begins!

The entrance to the place is an unkept dirt road, certainly not used for vehicle access due to it's narrowness and forest intrusion. At night time the forest around the road is pitch black. About half of a mile down, the road opens into a field where you get your view of the cemetery. My friend and I spent a few hours walking around checking graves and the area. It was interesting because some of the graves dates as far back as the late 1700's. There were many older graves in the forest along a network of old trails circling the cemetery. A few creepy things that we noticed during our day trip were a few rope nooses handing from random trees, a very large wooden cross that seemed anything but holy and a erie "alter" like platform high in the surrounding Ponderosa Pines. The platform must have been 100 feet of the ground at a height far to high for hunting or children playing.

When we returned to the cemetery around eleven it was all dark! We noticed that as we entered the field the darkness lifted as the glow of the cemetery invited us. I don't know if blue is how I would explain it, but there was a fog that seemed to set in as we arrived. I have heard that the moon, swamp gas and bla bla bla can play tricks on the mind, but not here. If there was doubt in my mind, my best friend and my brother were along my side. It was creepy! The one thing that really caught our attention that evening was a small fold out chair that was placed in the corner of the cemetery. This chair was not there earlier! The chair was in a place overlooking the entire cemetery. We didn't see much that evening but should not have returned!

The second visit is not even worth talking about. A few guys wandering around the forest searching for a thrill that can't be explained. When you encounter something that has no logical explanation, it is a rush equal to doing over 150 mph or jumping of a 50 ft cliff. That is what led us back again.

The third visit was a little different. We arrived around 2 AM and decided that the cemetery was not enough. As we were walking through the trails we came to a place where it was still. Complete silence, and then voices..... Loud voices, not our voices! This also happened to be right by that "alter" I referred earlier in the trees. As we split, this thing followed us all the way tot he road. It chased us! chanting all the while. We all made it to my jeep thinking our troubles were over. Again we were in for a treat!

As I turned on my jeep, we instantly noticed that there was a big problem with my stereo. Instead of music there was white noise. The noise changed pitches from low tones to high pitched, back and forth. I kept switching from CD to radio, but there was nothing but white noise. This had never happened before and we were unable to find a logical explanation. At the time I had a very expensive after market stereo which never had any issues. I even asked an expert installer at the stereo shop and he said that he had never encountered an issue like this white noise. The noise continued until we got back into civilization and everything with the stereo went back to normal The noise that we heard was a warning to us for us to never come back. It was clear between the three of us that whatever chased us out of the forest that evening was present in the jeep on the way home. That was our encounter at the Blue Light Cemetery, which was much scarier if you were there.

Fear: Hornets are Dangerous

The Norwegian Hornet, which usually is called Wasp

Ever since I was a kid I had this fear of hornets, not because I had heard that it would really hurt if one got stung, but because I had this deep feeling inside me that these small aggressive bugs had the ability to kill, that even one or two of them could be dangerous.

Back then I did not know anything about allergies, and that it was possible to be deadly allergic to something, I grew up dealing with hornets every summer, but never got stung, and as I grew older I learned to control my fear, even to be able to study them as they fly their way from flower to flower, or landed on my arm or jacket for a while before heading back to their busy day collecting and building their hive.

Then when I was 20 I was stung by one for the first time while picking up some dry branches searching for rare mushroom for a biology class, it made me feel woozy, lightheaded and, weak until the next day but nothing more came out of it, I did know now that the first sting usually never trigger a severe allergic response and that this would not be the time to confirm or disprove my long fear of the deadliness of hornets stings.

Dividalen in Troms, Norway

The real test came about two years later, I was again out on a full week biology field trip collecting rare plants, mosses and grasses for a higher botanical diversity class, way up in the mountains in Dividalen, close to Tromsø. On the second day we went up and I started feeling strange, a hornet had somehow gotten caught underneath my shirt and my backpack, stinging me in the lower end of my spine. As we continued up I noticed my eyesight started to go blurred, and the eyes was no longer able to adjust to direct sunlight, since we were already high up in the mountains, with no way of contacting anybody with use of cellphone since there was no coverage of the area, I figured it would not let the others know that I was not doing to well.

We continued ascending up to the top, and as we were getting ready to return back to the camp we had made up at the summit, my heart beat was starting to slow down dangerously low. Still I managed to will myself to placing my feet in-front of the other one step at the time. I even lost balance one place but since the forest was so dense none of the others noticed, I got up and continued walking, supporting myself on one tree at the time, I looked down and noticed I had a twig half an inch thick standing out of my upper thigh, I felt no pain, so I went ahead and pulled it out, there was no blood and no pain, most of my concentration was at this point focused on keeping my heart beat from slowing even more down, and making sure I was not lagging too far behind the others, only one guy was behind so I knew I was not last.. yet.

Finally we all got out of the dense forest, and I asked one of the other girls to check my back for me, it was totally swollen from my tail bone all the way up to the top of my neck, making me look like I was hunchbacked. At this point it had been about 6 hours since I was stung, and I was starting to feel better again, so there was no need to cancel the field trip because of a few minor bruises, the wound in my thigh had closed up and I decided to go to sleep to the next day to see if the swelling had gone down. The very next morning the swelling was almost totally gone, only a few months later did I tell them how sick I had actually been on the field trip.

This is just one of many personal warnings that I have received and so far all of them have held true when it comes to things that are of danger, of use or of danger to those close to me, keeping myself and others safe both from internal and external dangers.

Mysterious pillar of light in 1968

Illustration Photo: Example of a beam like Aurora Borealis
http://picturepawfect.com/auroras/auroras.htm

This is a experience my mother had when she was a teenage girl back in the fall of 1968, in Northern Norway. She told me about this experience many times, and have since then tried to figure out what it could have been, could it really have been aliens or should one look for a more down to earth explanation.

This all happened on a Friday night in 1968, her and her older sister had been out dancing and were on their way back home, as they were walking the sky was clear, there was no moon but the stars still kept the path through the forest lit enough for them to see. Knowing that their parents had told them it was sinful to dance, and listening to rock music they were making plans for what to say if they happened to be asked how the night had been over at their friends house.

My mother told her older sister how she could not believe it could be evil to dance, and they both agreed, jokingly her sister starts dancing, and they are booth chuckling, as a pillar of light comes down on my aunt who is still dancing. My mother pulls my paralyzed aunt out of the light and they both start running home, as they are running my aunt is to scared to look back, but my mother wanted to see what was going on so she looks and yells for them to run faster as they could see the pillar of light is trying to search for them, zig-zagging through the forest. She could not see anything that the light could come from, no balloons, no planes or anything. To this day she does not know for sure what happened that calm autumn night in Northern Norway.

The Menehune of Waimanalo

Thicket of Strawberry Guavas, Photo by PJ

I just got this story from Jeff in Hawaii, Oahu.
When I was 18 years old I lived and worked at a banana farm up in the mountain ridge of Waimanalo, whenever we moved deeper into the forest we felt like we were at the mercy of the Menehunes, which in Hawaiian mythology is described as a people, as dwarfs in size, living in the deep forests and hidden valleys of Hawaii, the Menehune are though to sometimes shape-shift and appear in animal form.

Higher up the nearby old hiking trail we had a secret off beat spot which one could only get to by crawling through a 10 feet thicket of forest before entering a area of Strawberry Guava which was about 25 long in order to get to our spot of pakalolo. This time I was up there all by myself and it was 5pm, I had just entered the area of Strawberry Guavas I got this odd feeling of being watched from behind, and a strong feeling of a presence, as I turned I noticed a black dog about 12 feet away staring at me, at first I thought it was a wild dog, but I also had this eerie feeling it was something else, and what happened next I have no rational explanation to, I watched as the black dog moved 6 feet to the right towards a strawberry guava with a trunk about 1 inch thick as I watched the dog move behind the tree it did not come out on the other side. I walked over to the tree where the dog disappeared and could not find any trace of it.

Another time while I was up at the same path with a few of my friends we all got this eerie feeling of a presence, and we heard a distant soft drum beat, we moved over to a stream nearby again feeling more eerie as we looked over the edge we spotted what looked like a yellow tribal feather flume. At this point I got this feeling something ominous was about to happen, as a branch fell over us, we started running and I stumbled over some ancient barbed wire, ruining my pants and as I was there trapped I felt like something was breathing heavily in my neck. I we ran quickly back to the trail and returned home, scared, bruised and battered but luckily only lightly harmed.

You could also read more about the menehune in Jeff's other story, The Barking Dogs at Waimanalo, Another interesting story is about the menehune like 'E'epa which are similar to leprechauns in The Leuprechaun like 'E'epa on the Island of Kauai.

Don't Go Into The woods

Beto from Brazil sent this one in
A few weeks ago I started jogging. I always jog in a wooded area for about a mile. At the same spot I always hear a voice whispering ...stay out... No one is ever around but I hear a voice in a whisper telling me not to go into the wooded area any further. I have always listened and turned and jogged back the way I came from. I told a close friend about what I hear and she said it was all in my mind. So I felt she was correct and the next time I went for my jog I indeed heard the same voice in a demanding whisper warning me NOT to go deeper into the wooded area. However, this time I did not listen to the voice and I did jog deeper into the wooded area.

I jogged about 3 more blocks deeper into the wooded area and then I started to feel light headed. I was wondering what was making me feel so faint and the last thing I remember until I woke up on the ground about 4 hours later with scratches all over my body, It felt very sore the next couple of days. I visited my doctor and the scratches could not be explained. There was 40 different scratches on my body and the doctor said they looked like someone scratching using their fingernails.

I never went back into the woods after that. I do wonder who or what attacked me after I fainted and I also wonder what is in the woods that the voice do not want me to see.
