The Phantom Phone

Illustration Rotary Phone, in courtesy of Wikimedia Commons

This story took place when I was very small and, has been retold to me. something happened to me during my very early childhood, I must have been about the age of four, so even though I do not recall this specific event myself  I do recall several others from the house from I grew older. Now my Grandparents were some of the few that had not installed a phone in their house yet and the house were already back then ancient and well known in the area for its high amount of paranormal activity.

This all started in the afternoon, while two elderly ladies from the neighborhood were visiting drinking their cup of coffee with myself, and my grandmother present as she happened to be baby sitting me for the evening while my parents were away for work. All of a sudden we would all hear the loud and clear sound of a phone ringing, my grandmother grabbed my hand and the two of us walked over to the part of the house the sound was coming from, the phone kept ringing and ringing and we walked outside towards the household workshop where the sound became even louder.

Now I looked up at my grandmother and told her not to be scared, it was just the spirit of the house, bringing message that they too were looking forward to watch as the house got a phone installed so all of the family could talk. With this my grandmother settled and we returned back to the two elderly ladies that still were present drinking the coffee in the kitchen.

They both turned towards my grandmother and wondered if she had figured out what the ringing sound was all about, I looked up at them and said loud and clear it was just the spirit of the house, saying we should have a phone. Spirits have their own way of letting us know what they want in this house. they let us know in different ways when they are happy or not and what they want. With this the two elderly ladies rushed down the last of their coffee, and hurried back home, they did not want to stay one moment longer in the house, they had heard it was haunted but had not put too much credence into the myth of our family home being haunted. Now they knew for sure.

I must add that several of my grandmothers family members had been wishing for them to add a phone to the house so they could talk, since they were living far away. This seemed to be the way of the House showing its own way of the phone. Sometimes the energies of a place can manifest itself to make the wishes of those that dwell there come true, and this must been one of those times.

The Sacred Power of the Ti leaf

The Ti Plant, also known as Ki, Cordyline fruticosa
Photo by PJ, Honolulu, Hawaii 2005

This is another story shared by Loa and it is about the power of the mysterious Ti leaf, as experienced by her mother when she was a little girl.

One day my grandmother asked my mother to go pick ti leaves, so my mother went around looking for some. My mother noticed that the vacant house next door had an abundance of ti leaves growing in their backyard, so she decided to save time by picking all the leaves she needed there. She noticed that the ti leaves were planted in a circle and thought that was a little weird, but that did not stop her. When my mother got home, my grandmother was trilled to see all the ti leaves and asked my mother "where did you get them from?" My mother responded "Oh, I got them from next door." My grandmother's mouth dropped open and immediately called the medicine man.

When the medicine man arrived my grandmother quickly told him him the situation and they both started rubbing my mother down with a special ointment that was made by the medicine  man. My mother was so confused on what was going on. She remembers that as night came my grandmother and medicine man  surrounded her in the living room and started to do their ritual. The medicine man chanted in a foreign language and my grandmother being a devout catholic, prayed. My mother remembers that all of a sudden all the windows and doors started rattling like someone was trying to get in,but my grandmother and the medicine man kept on with their ritual until it all stopped.

The next morning my grandmother explained to my mother that the ti leaves she picked were in a circular pattern for a reason. They were surrounding an ancient Hawaiian burial ground for evil kahunas (Hawaiian priest or traditional healer) of long ago. The Ti leaves that my mother picked were planted there long ago by ancient Hawaiians to keep the evil spirits from roaming free, so when my mother picked them she released those spirits.

That same day the medicine man replanted every single ti leaf back in its original place and did a chant of forgiveness. The spirits were back to where they belong and my mother till this day always tells us, her children "Make sure you get permission before picking ti leaves"

House Blessings - Your Home is Your Temple, A Sanctuary for You

This is my account of the power of house blessings, and the peace of mind one could have in ones home when it is kept physically and spiritually in order, and as such protected against evil forces of all sorts.

In Tromsø a few years ago I felt like my home was becoming desecrated, there was this one heinous video circling on the web showing people getting murdered in the most horrible way, and my boyfriend kept watching them all over all day, whenever he had friends over his first action would be to show the uncensored video which one could not see in fullness on Norwegian TV.

Soon he would be watching the site more and more, it kept building up his hate, and it felt like it was spreading filling the home, making it defiled. Then after one week of pleading him to stop I went ahead and did a house blessing. At this time, one of his friends was over eager to be the next one to see the murders in all it's evilness. I left them alone in the computer room and moved over to the South corner of our kitchen and started praying, I prayed for protection of our home, to keep evil out of it in all it's forms, to bless our home and bring back the sanctity of mind and sanctity of our home. It felt like a spark of positive power spread from the Kitchen and illuminated our home pushing out any darkness that was working it's way in.

After 15 minutes or so it felt like our home was spiritually rejuvenated again, and soon after my boyfriend and our mutual friend came over to the kitchen. I asked them if they had seen the video, the reply i got pleased me "No, for some reason we spent the last 15 minutes trying to get it up, it would not load anymore, strange since it worked perfectly all of this week before". Not only did he never mention the site after the blessing it seemed to be like it had been removed from his mind since he did not try to watch any of the videos again.

This is not the only time that I have experienced the effect of house blessings, but this is the most instant and deep lasting one I have experienced. Here there was not used sage or incense for the cleansing, as in the ritual of Smudging (Read entry Sage used for cleansing of the Soul and Protection against Evil Spirits)

The Shadows in the Basement

Our house in Norway was a 4 story house counting the basement. The basement contained a toilet room, a sauna, another large room with a bathtub our water heater and a sink in it, a laundry room and a storage room. There was also a room with a large food freezer in it.

Almost as soon as we moved in to the house we began to hear noises down in the basement. At first, we simply thought the noise was just because the house was old and it didn't bother us much at all.

Then one day I was down in the basement to get some food from the freezer and as I went to leave, I saw a shadow. It was a dark shadow and it seemed to have a head. I stopped and looked at the wall where I saw this shadow and it was gone. As I walked top wards the steps, I saw it again and I noticed both times I saw the shadow I would hear the noise. As a matter of fact, hearing the noise was what made me look and see the shadow.

I told Petter when he came home and he said he had also seen the shadow the day before but he just thought he was seeing things. However, the very next day he and I were both in the basement at the same time and we both saw the shadow at the same time. This time there was no noise with the shadow. days and weeks went by and almost every time we would go into the basement we would see the shadow.

At one point the shadow would go up and down the basement steps. I didn't like that at all and it got to the point where I refused to go into the basement alone.
The noise stopped altogether in the basement but, the shadow continued. it would walk across the floor and show up on the walls and go up and down the steps almost as though it was of some kind of intelligence.

I didn't like it at all and neither did Petter  but there was not much we could do and I think that even though it has been 6 years since we moved out of that house and back to the states. I will never walk into that house again. I always got the feeling that this shadow was something not good. Every time we saw it it made us feel like we wanted to move away from that house and we didn't feel at peace until we moved out.

My Paranormal Life

Illustration by PJ 2007: The Birch Tree, symbolizing life itself

Hi! My name is Pamela. I live in San Antonio, Texas with my husband of 18 years, Guy, and our 3 dogs. :) I was born and raised in New York City. I grew up in a house in Queens that was buzzing with paranormal activity for all of my childhood.

First of all, my grandfather passed away on April 16th, 1962, of a stroke. My mother, a nurse at the time, was at his bedside when he died. I was born 4 years later, on the same day. I lived in the house with my mother and my younger sister, Cookie, upstairs from my grandmother. We didn't know for many years that the room we slept in belonged to our great grandmother, who died in her sleep in the same room.

My family has a history of foreseeing the future in dreams, and feeling and seeing things other people can't. You might call us, hyper-sensitives. It has taken years for me to accept the fact that this is what I am. I have had so many experiences that I don't know where to start but I've learned why they happened; there was an incredible amount of anger and tension in my house. My mother and grandmother did not get along at all....they would go for months without speaking. My mother was an alcoholic and suffered from depression. My grandmother was sick with diabetes and high blood pressure, and she survived breast cancer.

At age four, I saw something white float across the hallway; it looked exactly like the spirit that floated down the stairs in the movie "Poltergeist." I told my mother, and she believed me but she didn't try to investigate what I saw. I wasn't frightened by it either; I was more fascinated than anything else.

Things continued to happen all through my childhood, but the worst places in the house were the attic and the basement. The washing machine was in the basement, and whenever I was done with the laundry, I always felt the need to run out of there, like something was behind me about to get me. And I'd slam the door and lock it. The vibe in that room was very uncomfortable and most evil. The attic always seemed as tight as a tomb; even with the windows open, there didn't seem to be any air flowing there. All there seemed to be was residual tension with all the relics of my mother's unhappy past; her wedding gown, her shoes, my cousin's uniform and boots from when he returned from Viet Nam....Cookie and I loved to play in the wedding gown, but it always seemed to break my mom's heart just a little when she saw us in it.

As I got older, more started to happen. I heard dishes being banged around in the kitchen as I tried to sleep. About the same time every night, my mom and I heard banging on the walls in the living room. I was taught about the Bible and how God would protect you from these kinds of things if you prayed, but most of the time I was too paralyzed with fear to remember when these things would happen. The scariest thing that happened was when I heard heavy footsteps coming down on the attic stairs, down the hall, towards our room. I was so terrified I ran down to my grandmother and told her someone was in the attic coming to get us, and I had left Cookie upstairs. Cookie slept like a rock, she never heard a thing! But Grandma, up in age now, went with me all the way upstairs with her flashlight and a fireplace poker, and banged on the walls of the staircases, yelling at whatever was bothering me to come out. It was deadly silent, but just being with Grandma made me feel safe. We checked on Cookie and she was okay. I could feel that whatever was there was gone. She drank a hot cup of tea with me, and then she gave me her Bible and told me to sleep with it under my pillow that night. Whatever it was making all that racket that night didn't come back again.

Three months after I turned 18, my grandmother passed away. I saw her sitting in the living room like I had my whole life one day, only to realize that she was already gone. It all made me wonder if all the things that I'd seen and felt in that house was all just my mind playing tricks on me. No....it's all just sound proof to me that there is something that goes on after we pass this life. I was with both my mother and my grandmother when they took their last breath 21 years apart, at the same time of day. Nothing is a coincidence to me....part of the reason why I was put on this earth was to see them through.

I don't experience much anymore, but I still feel things when people talk to me or if I go into a place I've never been, if I see a picture, and I still have prophetic dreams. I'm also thankful that my mom and grandmother didn't dismiss me when I told them I saw or felt things....I'm so glad they believed me. People need to open their minds more; children are so open to these kinds of things happening to them, and they can feel so desperately alone when they don't have their parents' support.

So, that's my two cents. Thanks for listening!!

Living in Massachusetts part #2

If you missed the first part of Eileen's story Living in Massachusetts part #1 you could read it here.

We lived in that apt for about 2 years and over those years a lot of little stuff kept happening. My husband worked nights and I was there with my young son. I never felt uneasy but I really was homesick for Pennsylvania. There was a small family owned store about 5 houses down from us. I would go there for stuff like milk and eggs and bread in a pinch. I would go out the front entrance and walk down the sidewalk when hubby was home at night. The street light was always on. I never noticed it being out. I did this a few times before my husband mentioned something odd to me,He said, that streetlight only comes on when you go out on the front sidewalk and goes back off when you are in the house. I said you're kidding, he goes I am not. The next time before I went out the front entrance I looked out the window and the light was out. When I finally unlocked our front door and went out on the porch it was on.

We became friendly with the two families that lived on the second and third floors. On the second floor was a young family with a husband and wife and two small children, a boy and a girl. Anne was a stay at home mom like myself so a lot of times we would take the kids out to play together. We would be in the back yard, where we made a play area for the kids, or we would go to the dam to swim. Anne and her husband were having a rough times and anytime they would argue, the kids would start to cry and the TV and or the lights would turn on or off, The volume of the TV would go up and down like it was trying to drown out the arguments or the kids crying. It happened even if the TV was not plugged in.

We were up at their place for New Year's Eve the last year we lived there and the discussion came around to the weird things that were happening in the house.

I was babysitting for the lady on the 3rd floor at night while she worked. I had her 11 year old daughter down on the first floor to sleep. Her mom would come and get her in the morning. She always locked the door to their apt and one day she came in to get her daughter and was really pissed off. I asked what was wrong and she asked me why I kept letting her daughter go to the apt while she was working. I said I haven't ever let her do that. She looked really confused and said that all her knickknacks were moved and some were laying on the floor and this was not the first time. I told her I honestly never let the girl go out of the place while she was in my care.

So we were talking about all these things when the guys start to joke around that we should get a Ouija board. I said No Way. I didn't want to go anywhere near one of those things.

My husband and I went back downstairs and were sitting in the living room and were talking about all this stuff. It was a cold night but not at all windy. On the windows I had long heavy drapes on the two front windows and on the one side one. There was a porch on the house and a large rhododendron plant at the corner of the porch where the one window was. As we sat there and were talking, the subject was back to the Ouija board when all of a sudden just ONE panel of the 84 inch drape moved straight out from the wall. It was parallel with the floor and ceiling for about a minute. It slowly floated back into place as both myself and husband stared at it with open mouths.

After a minute or so my husband goes, Did you see that?  I shook my head. He says that up till that happening he really didn't believe in this stuff but It made a believer out of him that night. He went over to the window to see if there was something that could have cause that one panel to float like that. There was no wind coming in the window, nothing attached to the drape itself. He even went out on the porch to check the other side of the window. Nothing!

That was the most dramatic incident that happened to us in that house and we moved out not long after wards. To say the least, it was interesting.

Living in Massachusetts Part #1

This is in from Eileen, sharing what happened while she was living in Massachusetts.
We lived in Mass for a few years in a huge house that we couldn't really afford to heat after the first year. It was myself, my husband and my year old son. I was asking my friends  if they knew about a more affordable place to rent. I watched my two friends look at each other and then they finally said, yes. I didn't think too much about that look at the time.

We cleaned it up and finally moved in. Almost immediately odd things started to happen. I bought a brand new pair of sneakers and set them next to each other when I took them off. I would go out and come back and find them on their sides. I mentioned it to my husband and he said, yeah, my boots keep doing the same. I thought it was just uneven boards.

The house had been a single 3 story family dwelling that had been made into 3 apts. One to each floor, It had a front staircase and a back staircase, as a lot of old houses in the neighborhood had. All 3 apartments used the back staircase, while the first two apartments were connected by the front enclosed staircase. We lived on the first floor.

I never had a bad feeling about the place. My son had his own room in the back of the house, off the kitchen. As a toddler tends to do, He didnt want to go to sleep and he would cry and fuss. A couple of times I was just about ready to go and see if he was wet or uncomfortable when I heard him start to babble and laugh and not long after that he would fall asleep.

Other things would happen. The bathroom door would never stay shut, I would check it, making sure it was latched properly but most of the time it would slowly open itself. Things I would put down were not there when I went back for them. I even lost one of my sneakers. I tore the house apart, thinking maybe my son had put it someplace when he was walking and playing around the house. I even checked the trash can and toy box. He tended to hide things. We found him hiding the car keys one day in the huge planted plant we had in the living room, We would never had thought to look there if we hadn't caught him burying them. I never did find the other sneaker when we finally moved out.

After a few months I was having coffee with some of my friends and knowing that 2 of the 3 had lived in the house at one time or another, if they had anything strange or odd happen to them?

They said yes, they both had, I asked them why they didn't mention it before and I really didn't get much of a answer. They  gave me the history of the house. It had one time been the home of a bedridden mother in her 90's and her daughter who had been tending her. The daughter was in her 70's and had a heart attack and passed away. by the time anyone figured it out, the mother had passed on also. The house had been boarded up for quite a few years before someone bought it and renovated it, breaking it up into 3 large apartments. Apparently though, they couldn't keep tenants in it for very long,, especially those with children.

My friend Jane had lived up on the 3rd floor with her very small daughter after her divorce from her first husband. When her daughter got extremely sick and was hospitalized, Jane would be at the hospital quite a bit. She would come home exhausted and very upset. One night, she was sleeping and woke suddenly and saw a woman standing at the end of her bed and she swears she heard the woman say that her daughter would be just fine. She said she fell back asleep and slept the rest of the night in a deep sleep. She went to the hospital that morning and her daughter had taken a turn for the better.

She thinks the woman she saw was the daughter of the house. She wasn't the only one of her family that had odd things happen. Her brother was over for his nieces birthday party when he and the rest of the family watched a toy duck cross the room with no apparent help what so ever. Her father had stayed over once and would not stay there by himself again after that. I did not find out what happened with that, but her father was a firefighter and was not frightened easily.

Jane also said that when she was getting ready to marry her second husband, she kept the wedding gown on the back of the bathroom door. She would go out and come back and the dress would be on the floor across the room. That happened a few times and she told me, laughing, that she should have listened to whatever was trying to tell her not to get married, because he turned out to be a big jerk. Jane and her daughter had moved out after the wedding.

The Hauntings of the Gettysburg Battlefield

The Battle of Gettysburg July 2. 1863

Gettysburg, Pa. is one of the most haunted towns in the United States if not the world. It is safe to say that there are places all over Gettysburg that are haunted. Some of these hot spots are; Devils Den, Rose Farm, Triangular Field, Culps Hill and Cemetery Hill.

The Devil's Den

Actually, Devil's Den was haunted even before the battle of Gettysburg, Native Americans reported a battle there, and that is why the name Devil's Den was given to it. People have reported being approached by apparitions at Devil's Den as well as being touched while at this location. I myself have been at Devils Den and each time have felt as if I was being watched and two times have seen a purple haze on the top of the rocks. A Purple haze has been reportedly seen all over the battlefield.

The Rose Farm

Another place that is one of the most haunted places on the battle field is the Rose Farm. The Rose Farm was used as a makeshift hospital after the battle. Very, very many soldiers died at the Rose Farm and most were buried outside the farmhouse in rows. There has been many reports from both visitor and locals alike who say they have  seen apparitions there and people do warn others not to go to the Rose Farm or Devil's Den. I have been at the Rose farm and I have seen partial apparitions on two occasions both  times outside the house around the area where the soldiers were buried.

The Triangular Field

The Triangular Field has been reported by many to be haunted it has long been said and, I myself have experienced that electrical equipment will not work there. Things such as cameras not working, batteries of all kinds suddenly drained of power, radios stop working there, both car and two way radios. I remember a time when my friend and I went to Triangular Field to check it out for ourselves. We took three photos and the camera itself did work at first but then died on us a few minutes later and also, on our third trip there our car battery did indeed die on us. My friend had his own dark room and when he developed the three photos, they all three came out  with just a blue/gray color to them. NO photo, just a solid blue/gray back ground with no photo at all.

The Culps Hill

Culps Hill and Cemetery Hill. It is reported that at both places one can smell vanilla and peppermint from the scented handkerchiefs the locals would put across their mouths and nose in the days after the battle. If they didn't cover them then, they would throw up  due to the smell of dead bodies rotting in the hot July sun. Also there have been reports of locals and visitors seeing ghost in the form of a huge mist or haze wondering the hills. I have been both places and I have never smelled anything unusual However, I have indeed seen the strange mist. Another place where there have been reports of phantom regiments is up Cemetery Ridge.

Cemetery Hill

If you want to find out for yourself about these places, go visit them and spend some time, if you dare. You can see things and hear things as well as smell things at the battlefield and, around the Gettysburg area all year long. However, because of what ( I ) think is residual energy on the battlefield, Most of the activity tales place in the summer and especially during the first week of july because the battle of Gettysburg was fought on July 1st-2nd and-3rd. I have heard that many National Park Rangers who patrol the battlefield over the years have actually asked for transfers because of the ghostly activity on the Gettysburg Battlefield !

The Haunted Farm House

Back about thirty years ago in Gettysburg, Pa when I was just starting to explore the paranormal, a friend of mine was a noted paranormal investigator in the area. Although, back then, the paranormal field was very small and not a very popular field to get into or at least in my area of the country it wasn't. At any rate, my friend invited myself and another friend of mine to go on an investigation with him and a few of his colleagues. This farmhouse that we were to help investigate was owned by my investigators friend's family from way back long before the battle of Gettysburg. Now this house was not on the battlefield as we know it today but was close to it.

My investigator friend (Frank) was very eager to go into this farm house and try to find out at-least some of what was reported to be going on there. One particular hot and humid Friday evening in the middle of August, Frank and his 4 man crew and my friend and I drove to the property and back the Long Lane to his family's farm house that had not been occupied for over 50 years. Even though it was nine in the evening and dark, you could tell that the farm house was in bad shape. As we entered the house with our recorders, cameras, flash lights and, lanterns, we all decided to stay together in the house and not spread out. The inside of the house was all cob webs and smelled moldy.

In the kitchen area of the house or at least where and old time stove was, there was a cellar door one that opened up when you lifted it up. and that was about it for that area. off from the kitchen was a sitting room and  there was a wooden chair in that room and a small table that was really in bad shape. and an old, what looked like what used to be a rug. The upstairs was just two rooms a large one that was the master bedroom and a much smaller room. As we were in the kitchen area I swear to you, the cellar door would at times open just a bit by itself and slam shut. We had a hard time getting upstairs due to the steps rotting and breaking but, we made it up there anyway. The smaller bed room was pretty much intact and nothing much seem to happen there. However, in the master bedroom. it was cold and this was in the middle of August and there was a feeling of fright, despair, and sadness. My friend and I and two of the crew got a very sick in our stomachs and had to leave the area right away.

We headed back down stairs and we all saw the cellar door open and slam shut a few more times and that was it for my friend and I. We went and waited in the car until the rest of the crew and Frank came out. it only took about two minutes for them to leave after we did.

The very next day while researching the farm house, we all discovered that back many years ago, the family that lived there was murdered. A man and his wife and a small child. There bodies were reportedly buried in the cellar.

Frank always knew that there was a family murdered there but he didn't know exactly when or why. We all knew that when we went in but we never expected to feel the fright and sadness and despair we all felt in the master bedroom and to this day I feel that the cellar door was opening and slamming shut because the bodies were buried in the cellar. That my friends is what spiked my interest in the paranormal.

The Haunted Family House

Another great story from Nina in Tromsø.
This is about the house that has belonged to the family for five generations, and of which several of the family members are thought to still walk and watch over from beyond, we have never had any ghost investigations done on our home since we find it to be of no point we know they are there and they interact with us in so many ways. Even though there have been some that have offered to do so since they have heard the stories of our home.

The first story I am about to share was told to my by my own grandmother, when she was a little girl she saw a man passing the kitchen window, he was dressed in odd outdated clothes, and as she described his appearance which happened at midday to her aunt, it almost made her aunt faint, and she told her she had just described her uncle that passed away many many years earlier, my grandmothers granduncle Hartvik. My grandmother said she never saw granduncle Hartvik again but she did experience him in other ways, throughout the years.

These family ghosts are known to be very protective of the family, and have known to act hostile to those that has not been accepted into the family yet, which bring me to the second account I will share from our family house, back when my Mother, Siw, joined the family by marriage she moved in to stay while her and my father built their own home to live in, the family spirits grew restless and actually tried to force her away from their home. This was witnessed by my grandaunt, granduncle, grandfather and both my parents so I am sure their account is accurate, and the force the family spirits could put on display surprised all of them. At first the things were minor, things getting displaced, feeling of discomfort, restless walking in the attic, stairs, hallway and knocking on the doors and walls. Within a few weeks it escalated to objects being slinged, and even boards nailed stuck was ripped off. Until Siw had enough and very forcefully spoke out saying that she was there to stay and rather than using all this force of anger to try to scare those to join the family they could use it to protect, of which it all changed.

Last I will share my own personal experiences from years of living in our family house, one of my first memories is of the house spirits as I always called them flickering with the lights when they wanted attention, knocking on the doors, or stumping of feet to alarm that guests was on their way, usually within 15 minutes before their actual arrival. I never felt afraid and used to play around as if they was there around me, I never saw any of them myself, but I felt their emotional murmur of joy when seeing their so many great grand child playing around in the place they too lived their whole life. I felt there was about seven spirits present in the house when I grew up there, all of them with their different personalities, some of them stayed mostly in the kitchen making sounds of baking, cooking and cleaning, others one could hear running around the steps, and hallways as those of playful children, which there were many that died in their early years. And again others were more bitter, quick to anger and moody like I think felt like the spirit of my ancestor Hartvik, which also died there in the house.
